Hi,

the manual of my Vespa GS 160 (1962) sais that I should use a 6% mixture of
oil/gas

is this still necessary with the modern oils.

I tried running it with 6% buth it smokes like hell and it costs me a
fortune on synthetic oil.
It also runs on 3% and even on 2 %, tried both.

But is it save to use only 2% ? What do you guys out there do?

Greetings from Belgium,

I have just had my 62 GS 160 rebuilt. On the gas cap of my tank it says to use
a 5% mixture. This is 6.4 ounces per US gallon. That sounded like an awful lot
to me. I asked the builder of the engine, he told me that it was ok to knock
the oil mixture down to 5 ounces per gallon. The oil today is much better than
the oil made back in the days when our scoots were new. I don't think I would
ever run a 2% in mine. Remember that the oil you put in the gas is your
lubricant for the engine. I would be careful how much you lean out the mixture.
I am going to run 5% for the initial break in and then cut back to 4 to 4.5%.
Even with 5% mixture on mine it deosn't smoke that bad.

I've been told to run 4%.

Hey, after scouring the manual, and service station manual for my 61 GS I
decided on 5% sae 30 oil. this seems to work ok.

Sounds to me like you are using motor oil in your gas and not 2-stroke oil. Bad,
very bad.

If I wrote a manual that told you to ride your GS off a bridge into a
frozen river would you do that too?

Use 2-stroke oil in your premix, and SAE30 in your gearbox.

I've heard %5, it might cost a bit to run, but it is a lot cheaper than
a rebore!

Point taken, 2 stroke it is.

Hey you, GS people, 3% synthetic. Your scoot and wallet will love you for it.

Cheers,

While theoretically that is true, I have heard of bad results from people
under mixing their gas on an SS180, though I haven't been able to verify
that they were using the Si7 they claimed.

Besides 5% using $1.99 Castrol is still cheaper than 3% using $7.95 BelRay
Si7. And 1998 Castrol is still far better than even the most premium of
oils available in 35 years ago.

Using SAE30 oil in the fuel is possible, since it was the way to go in
the 50:s. The SAE30 is a viscosity definition and there were oils that
were both 2-T and SAE30. The manual specifies Esso 2-T motor oil or
Shell Golden motor oil for mixing in the petrol. The oil had to mixed
thoroughly in special pumps and so to blend well with the
gasoline. Then the 2 stroke self mixing oils arrived. Basically they
were standard oils with a selfmix additive that made it possible to
pour them directly into the gas. The oil content was thus lower and
sometimes one sees old references (2% SAE 30 or 3% self mixing). Today
the self mixing 2-stroke oils are so much better so one can without
hesitation use the "original" mix ratio but with a modern 2-stroke
oil.

BUT BEWARE

There are still 2-stroke oils, often of the gas stations
own brand, that are quite inferior to f.x. Castrol, Motul, Bel-Ray or
other high performance oils (but not necessarily synthetic). I have
seen these "gas station"-oils causing damage on cylinder/piston on a newbored
GS160. I have also encountered problems with Shells 2T oil despite the
fancy bottle and gold text.

I use 6% mix on my GS. It smokes like .. but I don't dare to lower the
ratio after all the trouble I had finding a new piston
