Last night while watching TV, I saw two commercials (Canadian channel)
with a Vespa and both are products for women. One is for beauty
products: "Estee Lauder". It features Mick Jagger's wife (I think) and a
nice shiny red 60's Vespa. The other one, I don't remember what was the
product but it was a pastel green Vespa or olive green. A Vespa was also
used as a window display in Montreal at Birk's (big jewelry store). It
was a grey Vespa 100 (70's maybe). Might seem boring for some but
Italian scooters aren't really common place in marketing in Canada and
probably as well in the US.

I guess using Vespas to market products doesn't work. Well, it doesn't work
on scooterists at least.

That would be the second time that Birks has used a Vespa in their window.

Back in 1990 in the fall there was a red PK vespa in the window for a few monthes.
I moved there and used to walk by it on my way to the girlfriend's house!

Vespas and other classic scooters (but mostly Vespas because they're more easily
procured) have been employed fairly often in a gratuitous fashion for any number of
ads, print and TV. Not that I mind! I think the use of a Vespa helps make a commercial
a little more zap-proof. The viewer may not know WHY they're watching, but they're
watching, that's what matters.

Folks just like to see 'em. I've thought about doing an article for Ad Age on this
topic, but then I thought, I'd rather just continue to see these scoots popping up in
ads than collect the measly freelancer pay. (As soon as an article appears in the ad
journals, the "secret's" out and then you'll stop seeing all those nice scoots.)

So, let's all agree not to say anything about it to the Establishment, man!

Like, you dig?

Yeah ad people are fuckin'ridiculous that way....like using Studebakers as
"junker" cars in ads when they quit making them lest they piss off the Big 3
