I just bought my first Vespa--a 1980 P200. I would like to know what the
correct fuel-oil mixture is(by the way my Vespa does not have the oil
injections system) and what oil and fuel anyone would recommend. I would
also be interested in any and all other tips.

Thanks,
Rob

Rob, I am by no means an expert but I also have an '80 P200E but
with oil injection. I have the original owner's manual which
really addresses models like yours without but has a supplement
for those like mine. It says 2% mix and lists oils I cannot find.

Reading and searching the internet has told me that there are
oils designed for oil injection (atomize/mix best) and pre-mix
oils. Most reccomend a high quality oil for two cycles from a
motorcycle shop, designed for motorcycles/scooters and not for
snowmobiles, outboard boat moters, etc.

I would feel safe with a high quality, pre-mix,2cycle oil in a
well respected brand, such as Castrol, etc., if I were you.

rob, i would use lead replacement petrol and a good quality semi synthetic 2
stroke oil from any decent garage...the amount you need is 2 percent...get a
hold of a scooter measuring jug and that will tell you the exact amount of oil
you need depending on how many litres you put in your scoot...if in any doubt
always add more rather than less then you wont damage your engine instead
you'll just have a bit more smoke.......hope this helps.......angelo

The man is right, 2% is the way to go. I carry around a little baby feeding
bottle in the toolbox with the oil so I can measure exactly the right amount
(eg 5 litres of petrol is 100ml of oil). Also use the best two-stroke oil
(I use Castrol TTS, on premix). Also use Premium unleaded, not LRP.

I have to agree with Angelo on the subject of the oil. A good semi-synthetic
(or fully synthetic - if you're feeling rich) has always worked well with me.
Try to avoid any of the cheap'n'nasty stuff since it can tend to smoke badly
and lead to various knock on problems like being stopped by the
police/laughter in the audience - you've got the idea. Hope this helps ...

by all means use a good quality semi-synthetic oil (full synthetic not
really needed unless you have a tuned motor) and regular unleaded petrol
(high octane is not needed for these very basic engines, unless you have
tuned it).

Re lead replacement petrol: this is not needed on a Vespa as the oil
provides plenty of lubrication, and the chemicals in this petrol can cause
problems. I don't have all the details to hand - but some Vespa owners have
reported problems using this fuel (like the bike cutting out and refusing to
start!) - check out Scootering Int'l (Dec99? issue) for a summary of current
information on the LRP debate, there has been a lot of press on this
recently with leaded being soon phased out in the UK. The general consensus
seems to be that this will only affect older 4-stroke bikes and cars.
hope this helps, Fergus
