So, I am fixing up my friends 85 elite 80 and the steering column
surely had movement. I tightened up the top end after repacking the
bearings. It seems that the bearings were staggerd due to the size
differences and may have not had enough. I don't have the FSM. Anyways
put it together and locked column with smooth movement. After
assembling and a road test, the bike rode much better with no slop.
After a longer test drive it seems like the fork loosened up enough to
cause slop. I noticed that the steering column fork lock did not work
and was not aligned with the top of the column. I took it apart and
put on the lock after retightening the steering lock nuts a little
less and tightened the top column nut while making clearance with the
fork lock so it worked smoothly while eliminating most of the slop
maybe use a washer or neoprene spacer?) ?. Worked great but still
loosened worse then ever after a short while causing severe movement.
are the races and other parts in the column pressure fitted?
It seems like the top race was in good condition and I know they are
hard as heck (+4800 miles). I did not work with the bottom race. I did
grease the column threads and did not use any locktight. Top bearings
may not have all that are required. How many do I need? Any Ideas? I
can't tighten the head the way I want to while keeping the column lock
in working (off 1or2 mm) and it loosens up on me while I torque the
locknut and column nut well. Checked twice, but any bottom fork nut?
Thanks for reading this far and wouuld like to learn more about these
scoots.
