Several folks have written regarding their experiences since today's
outage. While this is useful, please remember that I said that today's
outage would only lay the groundwork for later changes, and only those
later changes would have any effect on bandwidth availability. I also
stated that there might be a need for a second outage--and there will be.
So here are the details:

1. There will be an outage NEXT WEDNESDAY, 22 May 2002. The outage window
is 5:30 - 7:30 PDT (1230-1430 UTC). I doubt that the outage will last
anywhere near 2 hours, but we need to have a long window because of some
particularly cranky equipment we need to use (due to fiber distances to
the SSL network).

2. No changes to the bandwidth situation should be expected until at least
2-3 *days* AFTER the outage on Wednesday.

3. Ted Nelson gets the prize for correctly noticing that nothing is
different after this outage. :)

4. As someone else speculated, I did sleep in, but that was only because
one of my cow-orkers agreed to do the work for me. My sleep patterns had
nothing to do with the lateness of the outage.

5. I'll be on vacation through Wednesday, so I won't have to get up early
then, either.

Enjoy your weekend.

Thanks for keeping us informed. In fact making us
curious to find out how the topology will change and how
it will help.

From what you described looks like S@H is getting a direct line out.
Just let us know what the name of the new router will be so we can
keep an eye on it :-)

Snip,

Your work and your time to communicate the situation is much appreciated.
