I have received a substantial amount of cash from an anonymous donor
for the purpose of encouraging multimedia science edutainment on the
web using graphical browsers. The first round of prizes for the best
essays in Foundations of Physics will be given Christmas Day 1995. All
entries must be written in html with gif graphics. Sound and animation
are encouraged. All entries must be original and free of copyright
restrictions so that I can post them on my web site at
http://www.hia.com/hia/pcr. All entries for this first round are due by
Dec 1, 1995.

The first prize will be $250.00 US, the second prize will be $150.00
US, the third prize will be $100.00 US.

By "Foundations in Physics" I mean, relativity theory, quantum
mechanics and field theory, microtubule model of mind, quantum
cosmology etc. Popularizations of the ideas of David Bohm, Yakir
Aharonov, David Deutsch and others of that ilk are encouraged.

$500.00 US is not a substantial amount of cash. Where is the rest of it?

Irregardless of the amount, the gesture of encouragement for
publically-accessible online resources devoted to Physics is one which
should be applauded. As the Internet information stucture rises from
its foundations, most providers set up shop out of a labor of love, not
for monetary benefit, and this rare award may spurn the the normally
reluctant on. More power to you.

In my pocket - where else? :-)

Seriously, I have received an initial "seed grant" for several
purposes. Notice I said "first round". There will be more rounds and
the amount of awards and their number will increase. Basically my web
site is evolving into an electronic magazine and I am able to pay, at
the moment, modest amounts for multimedia articles if the author will
give us non-exclusive rights. There will be paying corporate sponsors
on our website.

I am interested in well-written well illustrated articles in the
foundations of physics. Related poetry, art etc is also acceptable. One
criterion is the use of hypertext to increase the ease of
understanding.

The articles need not agree with my particular "hobby horses" * in
physics (see Lawrence Sterne's description of "Uncle Toby" in the
hilarious novel "Tristram Shandy").

* My hobby horses include:
Use of nonlocal EPR correlations as a communication channel by living
matter which transcends conventional quantum mechanics in the way
general relativity transcends special relativity (the latter a limit
of the former when appropriate parameters become small).

Microtubule model of mind as the coherent collective wave function of
the nonlocally connected quantum electron switches that control the
two-state mesoscopic configuration of the protein dimers on the surface
of the microtubule.

Universe as designed from the future in which advanced intelligence
destroys the Wheeler-Feynman "absorber boundary condition" to transmit
messages backwards in time in what John Lilly called "cosmic
coincidence control" (see his book, "The Scientist") and what Phillip
K. Dick called Vast Active Living Intelligence (see his book, "VALIS"),
what Robert Anton Wilson calls "Chapel Perilous" etc.

Dear Jack:

This looks promising, but the gentleman has a legitimate point: Who are
you going to find willing to work for the chance of winning $250?

I wouldn't even submit a sketch of a piece for the certainty of twice
that amount. You might find a gifted student who needs a week's beer
money.

Then again, how many students will have had time to assimilate (say)
(a) foundations of QM; (b) AI; (c) epistemology; (d) neural network
theory; (e) psychophysics; (f) differential geometry; and (g) logic?

I rather doubt whether *I* could have done that. No, this will not do.
With whom does your sponsor suppose she is screwing? I do this out of
love or not at all, and when I say "not at all" I mean "Let's talk serious
American moolah."

Warm regards,

BJ
