Hi All

I have recently been asked to model noise from blasting activities in
a quarry which has been mothballed. As far as I am aware, there is no
previously measured blasting noise data. It is my understanding that
this is impossible. Does anyone know differently?

It is my understanding that to do any sort of modelling of blast noise
you would need to know information such as amount of explosives used,
type of explosives used, number of holes drilled etc. Also, blast
predictions are usually based upon monitoring data obtained at the
site during blasting activities. Am I right in this respect?

I would be grateful if anyone could shed some light on this for me.

Regards

Scott

Hi,

There are, for example, some military blasting noise prediction methods
(simple formulas to estimate peak or max levels as a function of
explosive
mass and distance). Methods expect open of buried explosive
blasting at soil surface.

One method used in estimating quarry noises is to measure first sound
levels at various distances using quarry-typical explosion procedures.
From these immission levels one estimates by using a standard industrial
noise model in reverse order apparent sound power level (1/1-
or 1/3 octave power level). In prediction complete noise maps
or noise levels at another points one use this source power level
spectrum.

One problematic issue is to include reflections of quarry pit walls and
noise barrier effect of the pit (source/sources are bellow the soil
surface
around the pit).

Hi,

I add one rather new paper:
C. Kuzu *, A. Fisne, S.G. Ercelebi, Operational and geological
parameters in the assessing blast
induced airblast-overpressure in quarries, Applied Acoustics 70 (2009)
404-411.
The list of references is worth browsing, too.
