I spoke to them yesterday on Tel 0990 123 123 then the digital team
who said it would be operating as from 1st June, they may begin
transmitting then but this doesn't mean that somebody will be able to
receive straight away, they will send you info on the exact situation
i.e. full info on Sky Digitals Service (or so they say) if you ask to
be added to the *new* digital mailing list.

I would expect them to put on some sort of transmissions from May
18th-20th ; those are the dates ot the European Cable & Satellite
show (trade only) in London.

As you'll know Chris, Sky haven't exactly had a high profile at CabSat
for a long time. However, this year they have a stand, that's new, and
it's a big un. Right opposite where our radio booth is planned to go.
Perhaps we'll pop over and ask them a few questions :-)

Test transmissions have been taking place for several weeks on Astra
1D, however, I would expect something more than Sky News to be
demonstrated during the Cab-sat show.

The eta is 1 June.

Check out the digital page on the SKY TV web site. There is a telephone number
to ring to obtain an information pack. Existing subscribers can buy a new
decoder for a reduced price of about £200.

With regards to Sky broadcasting at the CabSat show in May, this may not
happen. At the ER show at the end of March, (one of the main launches to the
trade) Sky's stand mainly consisted of a video wall with "big bang"
presentations every hour or so. The back of the stand was used to demonstrate
the EPG software and BIB service. The rest was meeting rooms and corporate
hospitality areas. The only real live broadcasts of any note were the digital
terrestial service demos.

Secondly, as Sky are no doubt using their own NewsDataCorp encryption
technology and an immense STB specification the real question is probably not
when Sky will start broadcasting but when the manufacturers can actually get
product to the market. I know there will be some FTA stuff, but probabaly
nothing that's not already available elsewhere.
