Hi,

most of the dished on eBay seem to be described as 'mini-dishes' and '60cm
dishes'.

e.g.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Zone-2-60cm-Dish-Quad-LNB-Freesat-HD-NEW-FREE-P-P_W0QQitemZ360183372659QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_AudioTVElectronics_Video_Televisions?hash=item53dc9a1b73&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

Are these good enough for Freesat HD viewing or should I be looking for a
full sized (as opposed to mini) dish?

If so, what size dish is this?

I have tested my new Freesat TV with a portable dish which measures 67(64)
cms high and 63(60) cms wide.
The two measurements are the total length/width and the slightly smaller
dimensions of the curved reflecting surface not including the outer rim.
How would this dish be described? 70cm?

The dish advertised above is "W:76cm x H:56cm Zone 2 Mini Dish" so is quite
different in shape from the one I have previously used.
Is this optimised for Sky?

I have seeen a FAQ in the past but can't seem to find it at the moment.

TIA

Even more confused.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/60-cm-RAVEN-ZONE-2-SKY-FREESAT-DISH-for-home-caravan_W0QQitemZ230384430839QQcategoryZ29783QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp4340.m263QQ_trkparmsZalgo%3DSIC%26its%3DI%26itu%3DUCI%252BIA%252BUA%252BIEW%252BFICS%252BUFI%26otn%3D11%26ps%3D63
offers a Raven 2 dish (same as above) but quotes "60cm Top to Bottom & 76cm
Side to Side". So is it 56cm or 60cm top to bottom?

So-called Sky Zone 2 dishes are supplied as standard for those at the
outer edges of the Astra2 footprint (eg Scotland).

I have always felt that the smaller Zone 1 dish was sized so that it
wouldn't reliably get earlier non-Sky channels that were weaker than the
Sky ones, rather than for good all-weather reception. A Zone 2 in most
of England rarely suffers from break-up even in severe weather.

Sky or Freesat; SD or HD doesn't require a different dish. It is
transmitted from the same birds, albeit in a slightly different way.

Thanks to those who responded.

Looks like any dish will do then.

Now just wondering why the solid dishes are higher than they are wide and
the Sky mesh dishes are wider than they are high.

"Normal" dishes have an LNB which has a circular field of "vision"
(remember that relative to the LNB the dish is leaning back and looks
like a circle). Dishes which are wider than they are high (a feature not
unique to those supplied by $ky) require a non-standard LNB which is
internally masked to cut out RF noise which would come from behind the
dish over the top or under the bottom (or looking at it the other way,
to increase the horizontal field of view). The original reason for the
shape chosen by Uncle Rupert is possibly more aesthetic than technical
although there will doubtless be circumstances where a wide rather than
a long dish is easier to use.

If it's any help, I have some pages on my site regarding DIY satellite
installation, look for the pages entitled "Mounting A Satellite Dish
Or Rotor" here ...

http://www.macfh.co.uk/JavaJive/AudioVisualTV/SatelliteTV/SatelliteTV.html

As regards shape of the types of dish, there are three main types,
which are described on the first of the pages linked above.

AIUI, the 'minidishes' which are wider than tall were designed to
improve horizontal resolution (a function of dish size) for the
smaller dish sizes. More correctly, I mean resolution along the
circumference of the Clarke Belt - because the satellites are only a
degree or two apart, there might otherwise be cases were small dishes
have insufficient resolution to differentiate signals from satellites
neighbouring the one the dish is nominally aimed at. However, I have
not seen any maths or like evidence supporting that assertion.

The page "Scientific Analysis - 2 Dish & Rotor Settings" may
particularly help you understand the difference between an offset and
an axi-symmetric dish. The mini-dishes are an awkward example of an
offset dish, for which I have not been able to find a formula that
yields the offset from its dimensions, like one can with the normal,
nearly round offset dishes.

BTW, meant to just mention that your title is all wrong, Freeview is
the Terrestrial offering, whereas, of course, you mean Freesat.

I have a Wavefronter T55 (55cm) dish in Amsterdam, and have 28.2 on it.
No breakups in all the horrible weather I have had outdoors since it
was erected this year.
