Can anyone recommend some good simple firmware for the Nokia MM 9600s?
My own preference has always been DVB2000, but for my Dad I want something
simpler. He only needs FTA TV/radio channels from Astra 28E (BBC etc) and
Astra 19E (German channels etc). Recently he managed to wipe all the
channels in DVB2000.
DVB2000 occasdionally seems to lose BBC TV channels (requiring a channel
re-scan) when Sky mess about with the PIDs (or something like that). My
Dreambox just works without user intervention, so I guess Dreambox complies
more fully with the relevant DVB standards that DVB2000 does.
I just wondered whether anyone could recommend some nice simple MM9600
firmware for my Dad to use. For example, does anyone here have experience
with the Nokia firmware? I'm sure I saw some downloads on a Nokia website
some time ago, but it's been a while since I played with the 9600 box.
Cheers!

To answer my own question for anyone who finds this on Google groups:
www.nokia.com offers several downloads:
1,2: Google for "nokia mediamaster 9600s customer support"
Software Update CIE2.4 for Middle East/Gulf
9600S_software_2_4cie.zip
This version of the software for the Nokia Mediamaster
9600 S includes the following improvements:
supports Show Time
Software Update Ci3.1 for Europe
9600S_software_3_1ci.zip
Summary of Improvements
Optimizes the reception of the French TPS bouquet
3: Google for "nokia mediamaster 9200s customer support"
Software Update FTA2.4
9200S_software2_4.zip
I downloaded FTA 2.4. However, the included Nokia Serial Downloader (SDL)
doesn't work successfully on WinXP. Rumour is that it needs Win95 or Win98
to work. But the free version of Transbox Pro was able to install the
image.
FTA 2.4 Review
--------------
In some ways it's more polished and user-friendly that DVB2000, but as you'd
expect it's less full-featured.
On the plus side,
* it supports DiSeqC, and both manual and automatic scanning of satellites
and transponders.
On the negative side,
* the channel list maxes out at 500 channels (total TV + radio) so in fact
you *cannot* auto-scan 19E and 28E, for example. (Well you *can* but it
just crashes after completing the second scan.)
A workaround is to work out which transponders you want from Lyngsat, and
scan each one individually, making sure to turn off "Network Scan" each
time (otherwise it will also scan linked transponders, possibly all of
them).
There is a limited channel editing function: you can delete channels or move
them around, but it's a bit slow and there's no support for categories or
favourites.
I haven't found any third-party channel editing software that works with FTA
2.4, so I can't back up the final configuration.
Overall Impressions
-------------------
So far so good. The Nokia FTA software looks easier than DVB2000 for a
non-techie to use. I can only hope that it's DVB-compliant enough that it
won't lose the BBC channels as often as DVB2000 does.
