Help! I just had the Starband 180 system installed yesterday; connection is
good, email works. Problem: I have an Epson PhotoStylus printer, Epson
scanner, digital camera, and Microsoft Natural keyboard, all require a USB
connection. I've been using a Belkin 4-port hub (little stackable unit) and
it all worked fine until yesterday when I had starband installed. If I plug
the Starband modem into one of the PC's USB ports and my keyboard into the
other, that's OK. If I plug the hub into one of the USB ports (with
keyboard plugged into the hub) and the Starband modem into the other PC USB
port, my system fails to boot or if it boots I get no internet connection.
I called Starband tech spt and they know NOTHING about using a USB hub.
Anyone out there have any ideas? Do I need a better USB hub?
I'm running Windows 98SE, Dell Dimension, 600 mh Pentium III, 256 MB RAM.
I have 30 days to decide wheather to keep the system or not. . .

Model number of hub is F5U101 (at least that's the number on the back).

My experience with the *band and USB was similar to yours. I had to plug
directly into one of the tower ports and not a hub port for the 180 to even
work. I had all kinds a problems with all my devices. The 180 is a USB
resource hog so I etherneted my setup an VOILA! no problems ever again. I
suspect you will have to do the same. Good Luck!

Prior to making the ethernet modification I was using the same USB
hub. The only thing I can suggest is if you're not doing this
already, use the external power supply; don't try to run the hub using
power from the pc. I was trying to run several USB peripherals but I
had to have them connected just so or some would not get enough power
to run. Once I discovered the switch on the side to use external
power I had no problems.

I have a Targus USB Hub (4 ports)
And use at least 3 all the time - only problem is I must supply external
power to hub with some external devices (power hogs).
Dell Inspiron Laptop- Win 98 - *starband 180 modem.

Ps
I Always have a web cam (or sometimes 2) and Dazzle video capture device on
Hub.

I had a problem whereby my HP 970cxi printer would no longer work with the
180 plugged into the USB hub (I had to because my UPS power backup and the
hub had to take up the two USB ports on the PC). I then installed two more
USB ports on the PC (an Asus A7V motherboard included them), so I could plug
everything into the PC USB ports and not use the hub. Everything has worked
fine since. It seems that a lot of peripherals like/require to be plugged
directly into the PC, not a USB hub.

Hope this helps.

I'm short on ideas but I have a solution to your problem ... one word,
ETHERNET.

tech spt if very often unhelpful.

USB frequently has problems. Your system will be more reliable if you use
ethernet. There is a good tutorial about how to convert your 180 at
http://www.starbandusers.com/etherme.htm . You will also need an ethernet
card for your PC, and a crossover cable.

I did this conversion, and have a LOT fewer problems with the 180 and
with the computer.

If you're using a network, you might want to see a diagram of my network
at http://148.75.72.214/starband0.html

And if you put too much power load on the USB ports on the mainboard ...
poof.
Then you get to buy a new mainboard.

Aren't the USB ports current-limited?

I sent the note below last Saturday, thanks to all who replied! After
replacing my USB keyboard (a Microsoft Nautural Pro with 2 USB ports on the
back) with a serial port keyboard, disabling Power management functions, and
removing lots of stuff from my startup menu, I've reached some small
success: my machine will boot and shut down.
If I want internet access I've found I need to reach to the back of the 180
and shut it off and then on, then boot my PC. That series of steps seems to
work. If I just do a shut down and then reboot I get no connectivity. I
have 25 days left and the way it looks, this thing is going back! I'm a
DBA/Webmaster/Systems Admin, have been working with computers forever and
this has been the most frustrating experience ever! For the price they
charge, it should come out of the box working! Right now I'm so frustrated
that I refuse to go spend even more money to use ethernet, but may change my
mind before the 30 days are up!

I understand your frustration, you spent good money and it isn't working.
First step.......DEMAND to speak to a second level (tier) tech.

Let them try their best to resolve your current problems, if in fact that
doesn't work move on to customer sales. It' s possible that your dish it not
aligned properly. If that entails bringing the install ppl back, or even
another tech so be it.
It may take some pushing on your part, but don't blink and
demand that it be done correctly.

mglenn,

I understand your frustration, and agree with you on products working.

In the case of USB, though, SB's system works. It's lots of crappy
motherboards and poorly designed systems that are the problem.
So far as a I know, people with good USB are not having any problems.
I had the same problem in spades with DPC and when I upgraded my
motherboard it worked like a charm.

The 180 needs to be run on Ethernet for stability.

You can troubleshoot out the USB, but it is a long hard road as you
have found. Hope the situation gets better for you.

It's not much more money, I hear that you can get a crossover cable for
$2.50.
