It seems to me that the only difference between GPS sold for ground
navigation and the a GPS sold for flight navigation would be program
and maps that it has loaded.
Thanks
No hacks needed. Nuvis generally have a rudimentary Off Road navigation
mode. Units designed for the purpose have many other features including
waypoints, routes, and course deviation indicator (CDI), in addition to
aviation maps and database.
I was able to find the "Off Raod" feature, look like it would work.
Any way to get an alternate set of maps to show the airports/airspace ?
Guess not. Garmin doesn't seem to offer the aviation maps/database for sale
separately. There are some Aviation points of interest (POIs) you may be
able to load into a Nuvi.

Is it simple to set the NUVI to use other DB(s) ? I did not see an
option for that.
If so, can more than one DB be loaded at one time and switch back and
forth ?
Thanks

Yes, you can load a second Garmin map set and switch back and forth.
Tools>Settings>Map>Map Info There's check box to turn loaded maps on and
off. You will probably need to add a memory card. POIs can also be
loaded but they just overlay on the active map. POIs don't take up much
memory.
What do I need to get the POI file on the NUVI ? Does it just show up
as a drive with the USB connected ?
Does it show up in the same menu and the map change ?
Yes. The unit will will show up as a drive when sonnected by USB - but use
Garmin's POI loader:
http://www.garmin.com/garmin/cms/site/us/services
Custom POIs show up like the preloaded POIs that come with the unit.
I was able to load the POI for Airports and use it. On the page from
POI Factory, they had links to some icons and a sound to play when
near a POI, but neither were valid links.
On the Garmin I had to go to "Custom POI" and then I could select an
Airport from that menu.
I was under the impression that Icons would show up on the map where
airports are, No ?
