I've been reading a bit about the California and Oregon trails. Apparently, there were a lot
of journal entries made, stating that, for example, "Made 32 miles today".

So I'm wondering... How did they know it was 32 miles, and not 31 or 33... or 30 or 40?

There's probably a more logical group to post this to, but I'm drawing a blank on which it
would be.
