Hi y'all

I've seen Powerloc Destinator available with a free 128MB card at
www.destinator.co.uk and the reviews seem positive, but I wonder what your
real-life experience of this program is.

It really appeals to me to be able to use my Pocket PC hardware and colour
screen for SatNav and just buy this £350 add-on, rather than pay £1,800 for
the same hardware again. What a waste that would be. But it needs to work
right and I'm worried this may not.

Is it slow due to Pocket PC processor speeds?

Does it have an ETA function?

How up-to-date are the UK maps?

Is it reliable? Don't want to get stuck out in the middle of nowhere.

TIA.

IMHO TomTom Navigator is a LOT better (See
http://www.pocketgps.co.uk/mapcompare.asp for comparative reviews - just
look at the sample maps for both products, and you'll see what I mean,
especially when you get down to street level. The quality of the maps makes
all the difference).

Destinator works just fine, or at least it does for my colleague, but he
keeps on telling me he wishes he'd bought Navigator!

And it's cheaper!!

See http://www.palmtop.nl/ce/navigator.html for details and mail order.

I really cannot fault Navigator - it works exactly as it should, and I could
not manage without it now.

HTH,

Mark

Correction - taking account of the "free" memory card, both products are
about the same price, but I still recon there is no comparison.

BTW - you need about 85 Mb of storage for the full UK map in Navigator, so
you WILL need the card!!

Just remember the battery drain on the PDA is high so you will get very
little usage compared to an EMAP or similar. The speed is ok for your
use, it is on my old Casio 115 and Tom Tom maps when I can get it to
work.

Battery drain is high, but with Navigator you get a car adapter so you can
power the whole lot from the cigarette lighter.

Destinator also does that and charges the PDA while you use it!

Yes, forgot to mention that. The Navigator one does too.

I don't think you'll be disappointed with Destinator, because GPS software
on a PPC is so impressive anyway, it's just that Navigator does it best
IMHO. It's all down to the quality of the maps - good ones make it so much
easier to follow the route.
