I think their computer map system is excellent.

Does anybody have familiarity / opinions about their GPS's, particularly the
PN-20?

Thanks.

Hi,

Please look at the PN-40!

DeLorme has fixed the slow problems I have to live with using my PN-20.

If I would be using it more, I would replace it with the PN-40, Immediately.

The PN-20 was the first GPS I heard about that would have maps for the
places I go camping and taking pictures, deep into the woods of the USFS
near the wilderness boundaries by van.

And you get maps of the entire US and can add many other layers. So far I
have not seen any electronic versions of the USFS maps, you need at least
the paper versions of these to avoid getting stuck like I did (Warning,
always check your route on the USFS map, you may be told to drive off a
cliff!).

buy the PN 30 instead of the PN 40 and use the money you save to buy a sdhc
card, you will need it. Up to 32 GB SDHC is supported.

pn 30 lacks an electronic compass and altimeter and is otherwise identical.
you might compare which map subscription package is bundled before you buy.
My only reservation with my new pn 30 is that AA alkaline batteries dont
last very long.

Hi,

When I looked at the PN-30 it appeared to me that Topo was NOT included but
another source of maps.

If this is true then the usefulness is reduced as Topo is needed for Useful
Road route preparing, my PN-20 has never planned a route that I wanted and
Topo must be forced to use the roads I wish.

The PN 30 I got from Amazon about a month ago came with TOPO USA 8.0

The data download certificate included is good for $40 of download dollars.
When that is exhaused, an unlimited annual subscription is $29.95

Hi,

Thanks for the good news for the PN-30.

I was wondering how DeLorme could produce a different partner for just the
PN-30, but it was just not clear to me in my quick look.

I would get the PN-40 as replacement for my PN-20 in any case should I feel
the need to.
