I ordered one of those at that price and Amazon delivered it today. It
is a brand new one in the retail package and complete
with the standard accessories and a copy of the MapSource Trip &
Waypoint Manager software.
I just checked on it again and that price is no longer any good. I paid
$188.28 for it is now $13.18 *cheaper* at $175.10:
I wonder how much cheaper that is going to get? Maybe I pounced on it
too quick?
The 76CSx is still $269.99 and up:

The question is, one wonders why they are dumping this particular model and
none of the others?

I wondered the same thing. If Garmin is going to discontinue production
on it that might explain it.
Since the Oregon and Colorado models have come out, Garmin has continued
to offer all of the 70 series handhelds (72 and 76 series models,
including the C, S, Cx, and CSx variants). They now describe them as
marine models instead of calling them on the road and on the trail models.
I think that Garmin realizes that the marine versions of the CO and OR
models are not going to satisfy the needs of the people that were using
some of the earlier models, particularly in marine applications.
If there was one model amongst all of those that was destined for
continued production it might by the 60CSx or76CSx as those are
perceived as the most useful or top of the line models (by Garmin if not
by everyone).
I would probably consider the CSx models to be more versatile than the
Cx models if Garmin had given users the choice of turning the compass
and barometer off if desired and in choosing the either the barometer or
the GPS elevation as the data in track logs.
I don't think the barometer can be turned off but the compass can be by
holding the page button for a few seconds. Unless you are referring to
something else.
I am with you for the GPS elevation in the track log, I would have liked
it when I recorded the trip in an airline plane where pressurization
renders the barometer useless.

Does it still have the SiRF Star III chipset? I heard a
rumor once that they might switch chipsets.

As far as I can tell it does. It does not say that anywhere on the unit
or in the unit's software. I fired it up in the living room and had a
3D fix in less than 30 seconds so it acts as good as the old one.
My new one is on unit software 3.60 so I'll update it to 3.70, and the
gps software is reported as 3.00. Which is kind of interesting because,
my old one is on GPS SW 2.90.
And I can't find an down loadable update that I can use to update the
2.90 GPS SW to 3.00.
I called Garmin Tech Support (1 800 800 1020) asked them about getting a
3.00 GPS SW update and they say I have to use WebUpdater to update my
device. But they would not assure me that WebUpdater would update the
GPS SW to 3.00 though.
Has anyone out there gotten their 76Cx up to UNIT SW 3.70 and GPS SW
3.00 by using WebUpdater?
I have fended off the use of WebUpdater because, (1) I simply don't like
to use it since it neutered a GPS receiver on me some years ago, and,
(2) I am afraid it will "update" something I don't want updated. Like
MapSource. They should have changed the name to MapSore at 14.1....
As a follow up to my last post, the Tech Support guy at Garmin send me
an email with a link for the GPS SW update to update my 76Cx from GPS SW
2.90 to 3.00:
He referred me to Mister Perry's excellent archive at:
http://www.gpsinformation.org/perry/chipset_firmware/Type_G/
and it is file: GPSChipsetTypeG_300.exe
That GPS SW update file runs the update directly, it is not like the
unit software update where the files have to be extracted to a folder
and then Updater.exe is run to do the update.
And the GPS SW update will report that it is updating software version
3.70 as it does the update but at the finish the GPS will report GPS SW
3.00. The restart will be a little slow (almost 30 seconds in the
living room) because the almanac because all data is apparently lost
during the update.
I did not know that the SiRF III chip set was called the Type G chip set
by Garmin.
But I sure appreciate the efforts of the Tech Support folks at Garmin.
They still do good work!
So now I have both of my 76Cx's updated and I'm probably finished buying
Garmin handheld GPS receivers forever. :>)

The spec sheet still says "High sensitivity SiRFstarIII™ GPS receiver"

Based on past experience, I don't expect Garmin's web site to
necessarily get updated with a change.
It's good to know there's file update alternative to Webupdater!
Note that the MediaTek and Garmin's own high sensitivity chipset would
be equivalent in TTFF.

I used WebUpdater to update my GPS SW awhile back when the unit SW
was 3.60.

Yes, I also much prefer getting an update file that I can run on
my computer.
I've never seen Webupdater try to update MapSource when you've
asked it to update a receiver.
One potential problem with offering separate update files is
that the user has to make sure the correct versions are installed.
A newer version of the unit software may not work correctly with
an older version of the chipset software or vice versa. Presumably,
(big presumption!) WebUpdater should make sure that compatible
versions are installed.
If I recall correctly, WebUpdater just asked me if I wanted to
check for more updates (not recent). If I didn't say yes, the
the chipset wouldn't get new firmware.
Thanks Jack. It's good to know the SiRF III is still there.
No, neither would I. As of yesterday, Garmin still lists the MSRP on
the 76Cx at 349.99, Amazon was selling it for $162. The Amazon price
has dropped to $162 since I bought that one for $188 on the February
19th. Maybe I need to buy a spare spare...
I didn't see this until Sunday, March 1 and the price has gone up to
$254.87.
Damn!
Glenn
Wow! That is strange. It looks like I got mine at the right time.
Maybe I should have bought 10 of them at the lowest price of $162.10, I
probably could have turned some of those around at a profit. :>)
I suspect it was a pricing error because the only time they came up at
the low price was if you searched for them by the Garmin part number
"GARMIN 010-00468-00", if you searched by the model name they would not
come up at all.
When will we learn? There are no "killer" deals in consumer
electronics - next week it will be superceded by a "new" model, and
the old one will be no longer supported or unupgradeable due to a
change in technology. Garmin are past masters.
MOST electronics are like that. All computers are like that and so is
software.
It pisses me off too sometimes, but I still think Garmin is the best
manufactured GPS available to the "general" population.

The 76Cx was "superseded" by the Colorado a few years ago and the
Colorado has been "superseded" by the Oregon. Many of us think
the 76C[S]x series are better than those newer models and dread the
day the 76C[S]x types are discontinued.
