Hi,

I have scanned a map and calibrated it in OziExplorer. I used three points
to calibrate the map. When I upload a track that should be on the map the
track loads up in the right place.

I am having problems manually creating a track in OziExplorer. When I select
the "Manually create track points" button on the Track control toolbar track
points are created but are being created somewhere over the lost city of
Atlanta. The coordinates are nowhere near where the map is and two track
points that should be 10 m apart are being shown as 12,000 km apart.

Any idea what I am missing? I can successfully create track points on the
Australia Natmap set.

Any assistance will be appreciated.

Sean,
What version of Ozi are you using?
Is the map datum set correctly?
And, the points you create, appear "where did you click" under the mouse
cursor or not?
If they are, but the coordinates are wrong, there is definitely some problem
with calibration/datum, I guess.

Hi Sean,

Remember to check for the most obvious first ;-)
It sounds like one or more of your calibration points may be entered
incorrectly......like a N instead of S ;-)
Check the co-ordinates displayed when you move the mouse, if they move by a
hell of a lot for the scale of map, calibration is wrong somewhere.....Check
also by loading the 1:250000 map, draw a track and then load the new map.
This should show the track on the new map in roughly the correct position.

Regards

Andrew

In that case the calibration must be correct...

This probably won't solve your problem, but here is the procedure I used to edit
tracks: http://www.gpsinformation.net/main/ozi.html

Well, this really has nothing to do with GPS, so shouldn't
really be posted in these newsgroups. The best place to ask
OziExplorer-related questions is the OziExplorer Users group:

Clearly something is very wrong. If you click to create a trackpoint,
it should appear where you clicked, so are you saying that the trackpoint
suddenly disappears off your map? That would be very odd. Most likely
either you are doing something wrong, or your map isn't calibrated
properly.

There are lots of Aussies on the Ozi Users mailing list.

Hi,

I am using version OziExplorer version 3.95.3.c

Map datum is set to WGS84 and projection to Transverse Mercator.

The points do not appear on the screen when I click the mouse, the number of
points in the points column does increase.

The cursor coordinates are all over the place when I move the cursor a
little the coordinates go from negative to positive.

I have downloaded a track and overlaid it on the map and it looks OK.

Point 1 X=1345, Y=1226, Lat=27.18.7000S Long 152.55.2200E
Point 2 X=100, Y=848, Lat=27.18.0510S Long 152.52.7510E
Point 3 X=1240, Y=1723, Lat=27.19.5760S Long 152.55.0270E

Thanks for the tips.

Sean

A trick I do to check map calibrations with OziExp is to turn on grids and
see how it aligns with the grid on the map.

Also coastlines from http://rimmer.ngdc.noaa.gov/coast/ can be used if the
map is on the coast or major water bodies (even inland salt lakes etc).

Not necessarily. My "guess" _is_ a claibration error.
