I have an eTrex Legend that has, so far, kept out of trouble. In
February we'll travel to Buenos Aires, then cruise south around the Horn
and up to Santiago, making many stops enroute.

Where can I get cost-effective maps that will allow me to follow our
trip and find my way when ashore?

Thanks!

Lono

OSM maps are free:

Use img2gps if you need to combine downloaded map sections into a
composite map:

Have a look at www.osm.org to see whether the downloaded maps
will have enough detail for you.

Thanks! I passed your advice to another inquirer...

Now, I used the tools to "build" the map I need, then downloaded both
the mapsource and the gmapsupp file. However, the mapsource file won't
load into the parent app - I get no more than a white rectangle in one
area, but nothing else.

The gmapsupp is really what I need. It can be loaded directly onto an
eTrex micro-SD card as the only file, and it'll be read - RIGHT?

Yes, the map needs to be called "gmapsupp.img", and it needs to
be in a top-level folder named "Garmin" on the microSD card.

I've given such maps to friends with eTrex units, and they've
worked fine. If your model eTrex will display maps (I haven't
checked) you should have no problems.

Sometimes I take a couple of cards with different maps with me.
I have a 76CSx handheld and a Nuvi 1350.
