1. Does the unit store things like tracks, routes, waypoints, etc. on
any internal memory?
2. Do items in 1. get stored on the expansion card?
3. If I need to manage space available for 2. what is the plan?
4. Can I still only put ONE map file onto a card (GARMIN folder)?
5. Is the limit of 2025 segmets still apply with the update that
breaks the 2GB limit, and what is the limit now? (I am assuming it is
now in the ...HC realm and is wide open).
6. What exactly is a segment and how do I know how many I am writing
to the card?
EXTRA POINT questions
7. I attempted to create a map file with Mapsource 6.15.6 to fill a
4GB card (about 3.9GB) but it stopped at 66% done saying my 6GB system
memory was not enough. How much system memory is needed per GB of map
file created?
8. When I try to write a 35MB map file to a 60CS I get the following
message
---------------------------
MapSource

capabilities.
Please make sure your device is connected to the computer and turned
on, then try again.
You may also need to set the interface option on your GPS to 'Garmin'

The GPS is connected and is in GARMIN mode.
9. How does one delete map files from a 60CS without loading another
map to it? Set it back to factory default base map only.
thx
The unit has two sorts of memory. It has internal memory connected to
themotherboard, and it has a little card inside next to the battery.
> 2. Do items in 1. get stored on the expansion card?
All the things you mentioned are stored on the internal memory, unless
you tell it to write track information onto the card. Use the answer
toquestion 3 to take a look at the card and see what you can find on
it.
> 3. If I need to manage space available for 2. what is the plan?
Take the card out and connect it to your computer. Or connect the
unit to your computer in USB Mass Storage mode. Mess with the files
you seethere.
> 4. Can I still only put ONE map file onto a card (GARMIN folder)?
Yes. The unit will still also have whatever map information is in
itsinternal memory.

No idea.

Read the documentation for the software you're using to edit maps.

It's more complicated than that, and depends on how complicated your
mapis and what features it uses.

Consult wherever you got that map from. The GPSmap series doesn't
have all the capabilities that all Garmin units offer (no single unit
does).

I'm using an evaluation license of nemo since 203 days.
You should really try it!

I also forgot to mention that the map I am using is CNNANT2008
I don't have a problem loading Topo2008 maps onto the 60CS via the
same Mapsource program.
There isn't a problem loading the CNNANT2008 maps onto a card for the
60CSx
Same thing with no removable card. Same answer to your question.

Since they are both Garmin products you can contact Garmin and ask
whether that map should work with that unit.

Yes.

No. That only data that will be written to the memory card by the GPS
receiver is the *.gpx files with track data. Those will not be there
unless you turn that setting on.
> 3. If I need to manage space available for 2. what is the plan?
>
If you want it to have space for *.gpx files with track data you need to
make sure there is some free space on the cards. The *.gpx files are
not very large, you can look at one for a full day with your preferred
settings for collecting track points to get a feel for how much space
you need to have free to handle the longest period of time you want to
let track data files accumulate. I usually have at least 20-50 MB or
more of free space and that would last for weeks.
> 4. Can I still only put ONE map file onto a card (GARMIN folder)?

MapSource writes map files to a file named gmapsupp.img in a \garmin
folder off of the root of the memory card. You cannot change that
behavior or the filename. So every time you send a map file to the GPS
it overwrites the existing file.
You can go to the Mass Storage Mode up put the memory card in another
device (a PDA, card reader on a PC, etc.) and change the name of the
\garmin folder to protect the gmapsupp.img file in that folder from
being overwritten. And, of course, the GPS receiver will no longer find
it and use it.
From that point on you can have any number of folders with gmapsupp.img
file as long as there is only one folder named \garmin. The GPS
receiver will use the \garmin folder and the gmapsupp.img file in it as
long as it is compatible mapping and unlocked to the receiver.

Last I heard the 2025 limit was still in effect.
> 6. What exactly is a segment and how do I know how many I am writing

A segment is one map (also called a map segment) as it is selected in
MapSource with the Select tool. You see the total number of map
segments selected (and some other stats) at the bottom of the user data
tabs.

How many map segments were you trying to include in the file. That
sounds like the kind of error you'll get when you have selected more
than 2025 segments. Sometimes, when you have too many segments, it will
give the impression that the file was successfully created but it may
not work when you try it. Or if it does work, it will not contain all
the track segments that you have selected.
To see how many segments are in a map file on a card, you can choose to
download the maps from the receiver. That will not actually download
the maps to MapSource but it will download a list of the maps that are
in the gmapsupp.img file and then you can look at the stats in MapSource
to see what was in the file.

Are there any drives available? If not, try the Find Device button.
Then make a manual selection in the Transfer dialog box? If you know
the letter (D:, E:, F:, etc.) assigned to your GPS receiver's memory
card, that is the drive you want to select.
MapSource will normally find any and all memory cards in the GPS
receiver and also any that are on the PC. And it will also try to work
with some other applications like the Palm device's Desktop or
ActiveSync or whatever that is called. You might try reinstalling or
updating your USB drivers.

Is it in the Mass Storage Mode or in the GPS receiver mode?

Put the memory card in a reader or PDA and delete the \garmin folder
from the memory card. Or just rename the \garmin folder and the GPS
will not find the maps.

I read the "what has changed" file for the 60cx, and from 3.10 to 3.20,
the support for SD cards was opgradet to version 2, which is SDHC. From
3.70 to 3.90, they added support for mapfiles greater than 2Gby. Now we
use 4.00. So the use of cards larger than 2Gby is now supported.
However many in the Garmin Support still recommend that memorycards
should NOT be larger than 2GB. So may be, we should upgrade these folks
to a higher version :-)
I use the 60cx with an 8GB card. I have loaded a full topographics map
for Iceland and almost half of Sweden in 1:100.000 and 1:50.000
topographics. I log traces on the card, and I see no problems at all.
Bo //
The U.S. Topo maps were over 6,000 in number last I knew. And the 2025
limit was still in effect last I knew. If that has changed I've not
read that.
You can download a list of your maps from MapSource to see how many map
segments you have now. I suspect, if it is working OK, that you have
less than 2,025 maps or segments in your gmapsupp.img file.
Jack
other info I have obtained
2025 is still in effect
track logs are SAVED in the unit, but the ACTIVE track is written to
the SD card if u set that option. I'm not really sure what that means.
the internal limit is 20 tracks @ 500 points or 10,000 max.
the ACTIVE log is only limited by the size of the card.
I guess if ur active log is >500 points u can't "save" it. Don't know
what it will do with it if u try.
a 1000 track points is about 138KB. But it appears that u can't SAVE a
track larger than 500 points, so what would be the point of writing it
internally - it can't be saved -- I guess u can export it to ur PC.
The ACTIVE track log (written internally) can be any size up to 10,000
points if there are no other SAVED tracks. 9000 if there are 2 SAVED
tracks, etc.
RE maps, Max file size is 948MB (994.5 MB) on a 1GB card.
For CNNANT2008, I have written the WHOLE continental US, PR and
Ontario & Quebec CA (987.2) to a 1GB card with 7MB left for tracks
(~45,000 points). I had to put Alaska on another 128MB card.
For Topo 2008, it took 3 cards, East (955.2MB), Central (930.8MB),
West (950.5MB) because of the 2025 segment limit.
Filling a 1GB card will only slow down the power up slightly the first
time u start it after insertion. So there is no need to use smaller
card. Actually, there isn't any reason to use cards bigger than 1GB -
it would take a looonnnggg time to fill up the remainder with an
active log at 1.4MB/10,000 points. My fullest topo card has 15MB
left-that's about 110,000+ points. Don't know what that is time wise.
And I just bought 5 cards for < $17.00. @ Buy.com - saves having to
change the file names on a computer.
word of caution, don't try to write the card with it in the unit. Even
in USB MASS STORAGE mode it is very slow.

The "Save" command is NOT a "save" command. It is a reduce and store
command. It shrinks a 10,000 point ACTIVE track to 500 or less points
and stores it. It also throws out timestamps. Note that the distance
between points may have been shortened so using the timestamps could
lead to incorrect speeds.
The "Save" command was originally a "Create a Trackback Route"
command.
The saved track storage area is a good place to store tracks that
you create for display on the map screen as a trail or road map.

When you enable "Log Track To Data Card" and turn on track logging,
tracking data is written to the SD card as it is calculated, live. A new
gpx file is created for each day's log; the name of the file is the date
it is created. You don't need to perform a separate save, the data is
accumulated live. If you turn off your GPSr and then turn it back on
the same day, data will continue to be added to the day's file. If you
turn it on the next day, a new file is created and data is accumulated.
Here is an excerpt from a gpx file (20090723.gpx) I made yesterday:
<trk>
<name>ACTIVE LOG114950</name>
<trkseg>
<trkpt lat="38.705276" lon="-106.339009">
<ele>3031.420</ele>

<trkpt lat="38.705275" lon="-106.339007">
<ele>3031.420</ele>
<time>2009-07-23T17:49:50Z</time>
</trkpt>
Note that elevation, date, and time are saved.
I have log files for EVERY ride going back to late 2007 when I bought my
eTrex Vista HCx (over 150 files). I also use a 60CSx and have logs from
it. Logging data to the SD card is a very useful feature.
