So, what's the updater doing, exactly?

This is my first experience with Garmin's "Lifetime Updater."

I got notified that US & Canada 2013.20 was available, and downloaded it
with the updater.

Then, the updater showed a button labled "Install" so I pushed it.

It's been sitting there, not doing anything obvious, for about 20
minutes.

I've configured the updater to "Install to Computer Only" so I can put
the maps on an SD card using an external device rather than using the
GPSR's slow interface.

So, what's going on, if anything?

Be patient. There are particular stages to the hours-long process that seem
to stand still. I have a true 2 mbps download speed, and for me it can take
about 6 hours total. If nothing happens after, say, 45? minutes, then it may
be time to start over. Usually, with an update, it's first asked me to
update the updater!

This was AFTER the download had completed.

I killed the updater and re-started it. The updater starts another
process, which is apparently responsible for taking apart whatever got
downloaded and converting it into useable maps, and a "Run As" box pops
up when it wants to do that (I'm running XP Pro).

The first time, I let it run as "me", but this time let it run as
"Administrator" and it zipped through the process in about 10 minutes.

Now, I can run MapInstall to actually get the maps on the SD card for
the GPSR.
