My question: WHAT is the "GPS Chipset Type M2" update? I called Garmin tech
support and got next to nothing. They said to install it, but when I
mentioned that their server keeps cutting off connection, they said it
wasn't important.
Anyone heard of this update? Is it necessary? The unit seems to work just
fine. Thanks.

Try the download and do it yourself method and see if it does not have
the error.
In the past, when I tried WebUpdater using updates, there was some
fumbling around with there being separate updates for the GPS receiver
firmware and the GPS chip firmware. It was like you had to agree to
doing it twice or something.
But I quickly became leery of using WebUpdater, fell back to using the
download and DIY update process, and have never had any problems since.
Look at the software versions on the GPS now, note the versions, run the
manual updates, and if you have the same versions then WebUpdater was
probably doing OK but acting stupid. If you wind up with a newer
version of chip set software then the manual update worked and
WebUpdater did not and all the more reason to never use it again.

Thanks Jack........
I tried the WebUpdater again twice after my message above and it finally
downloaded and installed the newest version of the Chipset software. I
guess it was just a server thing.
I agree with you that the WebUpdater is not the best. But in this
particular situation, the ONLY way to tell that my unit needed the Chipset
Type M2 update was to use the WebUpdater program. It picked it up as an
"additional" software upgrade, as you mentioned. Don't know why this isn't
being shown on Garmin's site for manual d/l and installation.
After this I doubt there will be any more updates to my new Vista HCx for
quite some time. Thanks again.
