I don't see it listed anywhere on the Garmin website,
but what is the SD card capacity for the Garmin Nuvi series ?
Are they all 2GB, or do some understand the HC of 4GB ?

My 200w uses 4 GB with no problems. I have not actually filled it up, but
he free space shows up in windows.

since the 2GB uses a smaller FAT table (DOS)
compared to the newer 4GB HC versions,
it really depends on each Garmin model
and what FAT table they can recognize..

FAT16 = 2GB
FAT32 = 4GB+

What does the 'T' in 'FAT' stand for? ;-)

Should have said ' File Allocation "Table"'

ok - we all get it -
we all know what FAT stands for,
and can make it explicit or implied

Let's move on to the question -
support for only 2GB or also 4GB, or even more ?

Garmin support is terrible. This article doesn't even have a reference number to pass along.
Search support to see if you can find this title.
I'll copy the meat of the article here...

Question: What is the largest SD (Secure Digital) card that my nuvi can accept?
Answer:
As long as your nuvi has the most recent version of system software your nuvi will be SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) compatible. This means that there is no limitation to the size of SD card that your nuvi will accept.

To ensure that your unit has the most up to date system software please use our WebUpdater program.

I have a Nuvi 660FM and it runs quite happily with a 4GB SDHC card in it.

At one point I tried to use Mapsource to create a map file on this card
for the whole of Europe and North America. It created the file OK but the
Nuvi would not start with that card in it. The problem was almost
certainly that the map file was over 2GB in size - this is one of the
limits inherent to the FAT file system.

Lots of small files on a 4GB card works OK

ran out, and bought a new 4GB SDHC card -
IT WORKS in my Garmin Nuvi 260 :)

BTW - if you want a neat R/W testing program
to see how your flash drives are performing,
I've been using BART - http://www.nu2.nu/bst/

Garmin internal memory - Write 256kb/s Read 535kb/s
2GB / 4GB SD cards - Write 450kb/s Read 565kb/s
guessing the SD cards are Class 4

I bought some no-name (A-Data) 2GB SD card with USB connector on it and read
is cca 12M/s (some cases even 18M/s) and write 7M/s - if connected in the USB.

I just google a little - and it says "is the world’s second largest
vendor of memory modules" - so if i did not hear about it - it does
not necessarily be no-name :-)

You can save media, include mp3 and images, and (if you work at it) maps to
the SD card. Of the three, I find the ability to save maps the most
important, with pictures a close second.

It's an easy way to show people your photos on short notice. The danger
being that someone may drop the unit when they reach a particularly
stunning picture.
