By default the saved favorites list appears to be sorted by the distance
from my house. How can I sort it alphabetically?

don't think there is an option to sort the favs...
I've also run into that situation,
where I have marked a bunch of local high school fields
and then have to re-visit them....

They are NOT sorted by the distance from your house.
They are sorted by de distance from where you are at that moment.
They are sorted by de distance from where you are at that moment.
Tey are also (in a way) sorted by alfabetical order, because you can
spell te name. Spell it completely, or just spell one or two letters.
