Hello ,
Having trouble with reading the screen not enough brightness or contrast,
screen quite faint. Is there some kind of reset to fix this or a trip to
Garmin for a refirb.
Thanks

Given the age of the unit, would fixing it be cost effective?

My Map76 is 7 years old -- still works. But, I would not try to fix it
in case it acts up.

GPSes are retained longer than the latest smartphones.

Sure, but this models screen was really bad from scratch. Not worth
fixing it, better replace with a newer model.

I'm not sure about the GPSMAP 76S, but most Garmins with a greyscale
display do have an option for adjusting the contrast.
It doesn't seem to be mentioned in the manual for the GPSMAP 76S, but it
is for the GPSMAP 76, which is pretty similar.
http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/GPSMAP76_OwnersManual.pdf

It says:
To adjust the backlight/contrast level:
1. Press and quickly release the POWER key.
2. Press the ROCKER key UP to increase the brightness or DOWN to
decrease the brightness.
3. Press the ROCKER key RIGHT to increase the contrast or LEFT to
decrease the contrast
3. Press ENTER or Quit to close the Backlight/Contrast adjustment window.

So try that, and see if it works.

If that doesn't help, you could do a master reset. This should reset all
of the settings to the defaults. Instructions here:
https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId={2a1ec320-5168-11dc-4ec8-000000000000}

To perform the master reset:
1. Power the device off
2. Press and hold Menu and Power buttons simultaneously
3. Release on the buttons once the Do you really want to erase all
userdata? message appears
4. Select Yes
