Garmin Express won't update maps

I'm pretty sure that this has been covered in the past, but I can't find it.

I have lifetime updates and have finally gotten arouind to installing this
thing. However, all it offers for map updates is the opportunity to
purchase maps for Europe.

When I go to Garmin's site and select "I have Lifetime Updates" it directs
me to get Garmin Express and when I go to mymaps after signing on it gives a
list of maps each of which has the useful information overlaid by the same
instruction.

Any thoughts on how to either get that thing to work, or how to avoid having
to use it in the first place would be greatly appreciated.

Did you install Garmin Express on your PC? Usually that takes care of the
lifetime updates.

You have not mentioned attaching your GPS to your computer. Both Express
and the "web installer" need to read the serial number off the device to
present for download any maps authorized to that device. The usual
routine is

Install Garmin Express
Attach device
go to Updates tab and check for updates.

Depends on the device you own. Those with standard NT maps will NOT
receive this update (2015.1) by Garmins decision. Only the "unicode"
Version of NT receives this update. Pretty easy to guies that Garmin
decided to save some cost and cut delivery of the NT version
completely, forcing people to purchse a more recent unit.

Thanks, Holger. The standard NT maps are what I have on my Nuvi 780. So it
would seem to have been a waste of money to buy lifetime updates, given that
I only got as far as 2014.2.
I don't suppose I should be surprised, given some of the stuff I've read
here about Garmin..

does update ok using Garmin Express.

Assuming, and I've no reason to doubt it, that Holger's explanation is
correct have you checked with Garmin as to why "Lifetime" ended during
2014 for your model?

I'm sure many here with "newer" model are now wondering whether the
lifetime updates for their model will go the same way.

Well. I for sure have (non-unicode Europe) 2014.40 on my zumo 660, and
North America seems to be on (non-unicode) 2015.10. Hence I suspect
this does NOT explain your problem :(

The Garmin rules to what Lifetime means are basically "we tell you
what we want it to look like, but we write that in a way that you
can't sue us to deliver". With other words, the reason is profit
improvement for Garmin.

Of course it will. With the increasingly generational lifespan of
electronic products, I can't believe that anyone nowadays would assume
"Lifetime" means anything than "the anticipated functional lifetime of
the product, as determined by the manufacturer". That lifetime in
years is in single digits, because of the increasing pace of
innovation and development. Not to mention that there's no profit in
maintaining usability of an older product, especially in the shrinking
market of navigation devices.

This isn't a recent development, nor is it confined to Garmin devices.
Anyone recall the explosion of ire from the first owners of Apple
iPods and iPads, once they discovered the batteries were not intended
to be replaceable?

I too purchased lifetime updates (76CSx) and when I want to update it forces
me to download Garmin Express, which I did.
Every time I run it it correctly finds my device and
every time it says "server not available--try later."
WTF is going on with these guys.

Oh yes, I used an older updater and managed successfully to load CNNA 2015.1
into Mapsource, but when I tried to create a map set (2.35GB-- my micro SD
card is 4GB) at the end of it all, I get some crazy error message telling me
to copy the full message into the clipboard & paste the message into an
email to tech support.
How many years do you think I will have to wait before they get around to
responding to me?

Again...what is going on with these guys. Their software is the clunkiest I
have ever encountered.

Any suggestions?

I don't use Garmin Express, because whenever I tried it, it would error
out before downloading the full map.

I now use GarminMapUpdater_v3.3.3_2.exe to update to 15.10 on my nuvi
2360. In options, I had it also update the map for MapSource on my computer.

I can't tell you where I downloaded that program from - I know that I
had to phone garmin tech support in Canada and he told me the website to
get it from.

I had EXACTLY the same problem! Express recognizes my device and then says
"server unavailable--try again later" which I did for 3 days.
I solved it by using an older map updater--described in a recent post below.
It loaded the new map perfectly to Mapsource (I would assume also Basecamp).
it is " Garmin map updater 3.1.20" It is available on the net. When you
run it...it will download a later version--which works. The problem arises
when you want to transfer the map set to your SD micro card. In my case,
the usual procedure of opening Mapsource, zooming out to 1500KM, using the
map tool, and then sending to your device, in my case at least, DOES NOT
WORK.

However--- thanks to a very talented software guy at Garmin, Charles
Pickens, we solved the problem.
The answer is when you send the selected maps to your device--you MUST use
the dropdown box and SWITCH the destination from your device to your micro
SD card directly.
It worked and Charles in my hero!

Agreed. I was just interested in the response Garmin would give to
Bill - how would they tell him that they were so confident in the
quality of their products that "lifetime" to garmin only meant 5 or 6
years.

I am not at all conversant with Nuvis (I have a 76CSx, 2007 vintage.
I too cannot get Garmin Express to work, as I have stated in this thread in
more detail.

However I did finally get 2015.1 on it. Here's what I did:
1) used an older Garmin Mapupdater program and downloaded the 2015.1 update.
It placed the new maps in Mapsource.
2) then zoomed mapsource out to 1500KM and, using the map tool, highlighted
everything.
3) Selected "send to device" and used the dropdown box to select a direct
transfer to the SD card.

It worked. I now have CNNA 2015.1 in both Mapsource and my dervice.

As you are in the US, there is no such problem as unicode versus
non-unicode. CNNA always is non-unicode. The picture is different for
european maps. There Garmin added unicode to the map format without
updating older models to enable them to understand unicode. And now
they silently drop non-unicode and only keep unicode maps up to date.
With that my 18 month old unit is close to end of useful life.

I am still using a Street Pilot and Garmin is still updating the maps, so
they do update some models for years.

Thanks for the hint. I just got a nuvi 65 LMT, and the 'express' site
worked for me. But, it is like to know an alternative.

I have just bought Garmin 42LM device, I have downloaded the Garmin Express software, but device is not getting identified by my laptop & desktop computer.
Can someone tell me if I can bypass Garmin Express desktop application and update my device?

Have you registered it with Garmin? You have to set the account up first
and then it should do the updates automatically.

And if that doesn't work, call Garmin support. I had to for my new Nuvi
2599. Although it was easy to register the Nuvi, I could not perform the map
update to 2015.20. The woman at Garmin was so helpful and so patient while
she had me do an update to Garmin Express, then re-boot the computer (which
took "forever"). It turned out the Garmin Express update was first required
for me to be able to use it to download the updated maps. Once properly
updated, Garmin Express makes the process very easy.

First make sure to update Garmin Express. (I assume that's the program
you're using to perform the map update.) Once Garmin Express is updated, you
have to restart your computer. Then you can download the maps.

Garmin nuvi 2599. Having failed miserably to update the free lifetime maps that comes with this device and tried the various fixes on numerous forums to no avail I eventually managed to to update the maps. I noticed that that the map updates were 7.42GB while the total capacity of the device was 7.02GB with only 242MB free. Inserted 16GB micro SD card, tried download, still no joy, same problems of device starting download but hanging or failing at various stages. Then noticed that Garmin had a plug in called Garmin communicator plugin x64 which appeared to be required to download maps. Reinstalled Garmin Express and then the additional plugin. Started download, about 3 hours later, success! (A small amount of the SD card memory was now in use). Hope this may assist others.

4 hours. Didn't look for file sizes, I just wanted it to be OVER! The
Garmin faucet must be REALLY tiny :-(

I've got a 2599, and it takes 4 or 5 hours; always has taken that long on my
various Nuvis. I attribute that to my internet's relatively slow download
speed of 2.8 mbps, however.

Before downloading new maps I always check Garmin Express for any updates to
*it*.

30Mb/s download speed, so the pipe on MY end is certainly big enough.
It took forever to install Garmin Express, too. I rarely use my
windows7 machine, and downloading 144 updates (just the security ones,
not the optionals) went overnight for the download PLUS the "Do you want
to install?" crap when I checked in the morning, which took several
hours more. Once I've said YEAH, DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL THIS STUFF it
really shouldn't demand more user input :-( If it needs to restart,
then DAMN WELL DO IT!

Not going to "upgrade" to win10, but I think I will swap this machine
for a better once once the income tax is finished -- normally on April 13.

My original computer a win 7 went down, so am using a win 10. Downloaded Express and installed. Express was locked so cancelled download. Now error pops up. Finally uninstalled Express and reinstalled it. It appears it is dribbling data.

What do you mean by locked, what was the error message? And when a
johnson has a dribbling problem, the usual fix is to go see a urologist.

Seems unlikely it's from the manfacturer: 1) posted via Google
Groups; 2) using a gmail account; 3) with a number that responds,
"This number is not set up to receive calls"; and 4) grammar that
