Eliminating unwanted towns?

I am using a 2460 loaded with the latest Australian maps (which is
good, because I am in Queensland, Australia).

But, when I use the Where To -> Towns and enter "Melbourne" I get a
list of 12 places that start with "Melbourne", of which only 4 are in
Oz, the rest are in the US.

I assume that there is some kind of data file with all the towns. How
can I delete all the non Oz entries so I only get the ones that are
relavent to me.

Which map(s) are loaded? Is there a North America map installed, by
chance?

No.
If I go to Settings -> MyMaps there is only one, "CN Aus & NZ NT"

Sorry, that was my only guess. Maybe the fact that Garmin is a US
company has something to do with it, or maybe someone will come along
who isn't guessing. :)

My guess is that these additional cities are in the base map, not your
Australian one. If this is true you can be helped.

This is a unit you can connect to the USB port and it comes up as a
disc drive onm the PC, correct? If yes, look in the Garmin folder in
the drive. You will see some files: one is called gmapbmap.img (maybe
about 5MB in size), the other is gmapprom.img and is likely about 2GB
in size. The first one is the world wide basemap, the second one your
CN map. Try renaming the first one to gmapbmap.xxx, start the unit and
repeat your search and test if you miss something.

Note: some units use the basemap for display starting at a scale of
12km. So, if you zoom out a lot it might happen that there is no map
any more after you renamed the basemap file. You can easily change
back.

Thanks Holger,

That did the trick.

It was a little more complicated though. The file was actually in a
hidden folder called System (at the root level of the drive), so a bit
tricky to find.

As I mentioned earlier, this does fix the problem and removes the
extraneous towns.

But, the 2460 does use the basemap for all the background map display.
With it renamed there is only the magenta track line on a plain grey
background.

Since I really need the more detailed background, I'll have to find
another way to eliminate the extra towns.
