I have lifetime map updates on my nuvi. Yesterday I launched Garmin Express
(without attaching the nuvi to the computer) and it told me that all maps were
up to date.

Last night I noticed that our monthly Internet usage had jumped from 12.5 GB to
19.7 GB in one day. We only get 20 GB/month.

This morning I found that last night's backup on my laptop was 8 GB; it is
usually 0.5-1.0 GB.

A lot of tedious searching revealed a new file, dated yesterday: gmapprom.img.
It's 2.1 GB. It's in the following directory:
C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Core Update Service\MAP-NA-2014-40\006-D2338-16

What is it? Why do I have it?

Thanks.

No that is the map file, but why Garmin Express downloaded it to the OP:s
computer I don't know.
Judging by the folder name it is version 2014.40 of the North-American maps.
Which version is installed on the GPS?

OP said he hadn't connected Nuvi to 'puter. Whether that should have
stopped the update being d/l'd or not, IDK.

Mystery solved.

1. When I launched Garmin Express, I didn't realize that it was displaying info
about my old GPS, a "nuvi 8 series." So it says "Your maps are up to date. US &
Canada 2014.10."

2. When I use the dropdown to bring up my current unit, a nuvi 2555 with
lifetime maps, it now shows me that 2014.40 is ready to install. Apparently it
downloaded that as soon as I launched Garmin Express yesterday. Why it consumed
something like 7 GB of bandwidth and 8 GB of disk space to download that 2.1 GB
file, I dunno.

3. Today I attached the 2555 and had the new 2014.40 map install on it.

New question: Garmin Basecamp only displays 2013.2 and 2013.3 in the Maps menu.
Should there now be a 2014.4 in the list?

Thanks.

In Garmin Express you can select (under Advanced) to install it to the
Computer, The device, or both. To do that, the img file (for the
device) is downloaded and a ton of other files (the gmap ones) for the
computer (both mapsource and basecamp). That explains the 7GB quite
easy. You may want to exclude that directory from backup, by the way,
as the files can be downloaded again with no issue.

Thanks! It took a while to find the Advanced menu, but now I have the current
maps in Basecamp.
