Has anyone else had problems with this and the beta clearing Recently Found
Places?
I reported the problem with the beta to Garmin via email (no response) and one
of the hardware support guys. Don't know if it made it to software support or
not, but didn't care to have another indefinite wait on hold.
When I switched back to 6.13.7, I was able to accumulate them again. However
they'd be gone if I went back to the beta. I'm having the same clearing
problem with the new 6.14.1.

Don't know if this is a permanent solution, but I went into preferences and
reapplied the found places number values and this appears to have fixed it.
Thanks for the link - my Mapsource told me there was no update available.

Didn't work for me - I was glad I still had the last version stored away for
safe keeping as this new version would not start up, complaining about the
existence of non-Garmin maps. Back to 6.13.7 for me.

Another change is the removal of the UnlockWizard. Registration under this
new version can only be achieved by internet connection to Garmin. For those
who prefer to use the wizard take a copy of it first before applying the
update.
I had used MS Streets & Trips & my computer connected in my truck for
routing until recently. I'm new to Garmin and had tried to use
MapSource 6.13.7 to do mapping on my computer and then transfer the
routes to my Street Pilot 7200 and was having no luck. I updated to
6.14.1 and within 15 minutes had a route with 6 way points loaded into
the 7200 from my computer. So for, I'm happy with the update. All my
trips have multi stops, so I want the routes done on the computer for
ease of input & storage for reuse on similar trips.

I've still got the mapsource 6.13.7 installation .exe file if someone
has a site I can upload or ftp it to. It's too large to email at almost 48Mb

you can download it from garmin with the old 6.13.7 link:

Setting Display Preferences
You can customize the way the Graphic Map appears, including the level
of map detail, the types of items shown, and the map font.
To set display preferences:
Select Preferences from the Edit menu. The Preferences window appears.
Click the Display tab. The Display preferences tab appears.
Make changes to the following fields:
Services—shows services and Points of Interest if they are loaded as
part of your detailed maps. Select Automatic to display these items
when the map is zoomed in to a low scale. Select On to display these
items regardless of the map zoom scale. Select Off if you do not want
these items displayed.
Symbol Size—selects Small or Large symbols for map features and
waypoints. Small symbols are 16 x 16 pixels and are recommended for
low color displays such as 256 colors. Large symbols are 24 x 24
pixels and are optimized for higher color displays such as 32-bit
color.
MiniMap Size—selects Small or Large MiniMap.
Terrain Shading— turns Terrain Shading on or off if you are using a
MapSource product that supports Terrain Shading.
Route Avoidances—shows or hides Route Avoidances on the Graphic Map.
See Working with Route Avoidances for more information.
Spot Soundings (BlueChart users)—turns Spot Soundings on or off.
Light Sectors (BlueChart users)—turns Light Sectors on or off.
Change Map Font—allows you to select a new font, style, and size for
map text and labels.
Click OK to save your changes.
I also do not see the option for Terrain Shading besides the Symbol
Size option.

Installed OK, both on a XP desktop and a Vista laptop.
One ongoing complaint - no language option. Virtually all software
suppliers offer this these days; recognising that, for example, not
all people in UK use English as their preferred language even if they
have an English-based Windows OS on their computers. As usual a case
of going into the install folder and deleting the irrelevant language
dlls which have unnecessarily been loaded as part of the bloatware.
They seem to have changed the map projection system. At high latitudes
especially this results in different vertical to horizontal scale of
distances.
Any one know of a fix for this?

Did the 6.13.7 update work to "downgrade" your broken 6.14.1
installation, or did you have to uninstall and start over from the
base version on your release media?

Thanks. With this information, I had the courage to do the 6.14.1
update myself :-)
It worked on the two machines I've done it on so far, although the
new pretty maps render more slowly. I don't know if my laptop has
enough horsepower to support this "enhancement."
Just me or others seeing this?
However, I'm curious.. other than updating my version of MapSource on my
local PC, what would be the importance of having the latest version?
The reason I ask is because I own a Garmin i3 running an older version of
City Navigator.
The only way to update what is loaded into my StreetPilot would be to
purchase the upgrade, with key....that's the only way I understand I can
update the mapping software on my i3, where I need it most.. when traveling
and looking for a specific location...
Am I misunderstaning other uses for MapSource???
Thank you...

The i3 is an entry level unit which basically just calculates a route from A
to B. MapSource is not particularly useful for this.
More advanced Garmin units will allow you to plot routes between two points
using as many via points as necessary and save them for future use. These
routes can be transferred to a PC using MapSource and edited if necessary.
You can also do the reverse and compose routes using MapSource and transfer
them to your gps.

It doesn't. Screen draws with 6.14.1 on my old R51 ThinkPad (1.5GHz
Pentium M and ATI Mobile Radeon 7500 graphics) are just too slow to
bear.
Thanks again!!

I have a SP c530, which doesn't save routes, but I find MapSource invaluable in
planning trips. I define POSs/waypoints/favorites or what ever you want to call
memorized location in MapSource and transfer them to the c530. I do this for
any place we have a reservation, and restaurant that sounds interesting, and
other things. On the c530 the "favorites" are displayed in order by the
distance from your current location, so I don't have to go searching through the
POIs that come with the maps, assuming the place is even in them.
I'm a good typist, and thus the alphabetical touch-board drives me up the wall.
I'm always having to search for every letter, while on the PC I just type away.
Further, it helps to have Google maps and other information handy when setting
up the locations. I just wish the lat./long. values were in the same format on
Google maps (degrees as nn.nnnn and MapSource (degrees and minutes as nn
nn.nnn). It is also becoming common for websites for hotels, B&Bs, etc. to
include lat./long. values. All the place in
http://www.bed-and-breakfast-in-italy.com/
for example, have them.
A second reason to use Google Maps with MapSource is the fact that in many areas
MapSource is a bit hazy on house numbers. (On my home street it thinks that the
numbers run in the opposite direction than they really do, and that there are
more of them, so my house is shown on the wrong end of the street. But that is
one that Google get wrong too!) With Google maps, in places with high
resolution satellite images I can almost always pick out the actual building I'm
looking for, and then adjust the location marker in MapSource to get me to the
right place.
All-in-all I find it a great help.

Same here, I don't have the slowest PC out there, it's a P4 2.8 ghz and now
it's painfully slow running this version of Mapsource.
I tried to install the previous version but I got a mapsource registry
error. I couldnt fix it. Fortunately, system restore worked but I only got
as far as this latest POS version. I am going to send Garmin tech support
an email as soon as I finish this post.
It's about 48Mb but I think I can send it to anyone with yahoo messenger
of anyone wants it.
Check your upload speed when sending such files using MSN, Yahoo, or Skype.
I find the connection speeds ridiculously low.
Try uploading it here: http://rapidshare.com/

No symbol size option! At large zooms, the huge automatic symbols
make the program almost unusable in a densely populated area,
especially if "Services" is turned on. The geocache symbols are
HUGE. I hate it. Other than that, the map displays are so improved
that it is almost worth the extra long wait for them to render.

Have a look at the registry. In the key HKLM/SOFTWARE/Garmin/
Mapsource/Products/2/Loc you will find product no. 2's installation
directory. The name of the .img or .tdb file may tell you which
product it is. If the name doesn't, open the .tdb file with a hex
editor. You will find the name of the product at Byte 9.
On my PC it's "US Road & Rec - Hawaii".

Thanks Dirk, the culprit in my case is also Roads and Rec Hawaii. After all
the negatives I have heard here about 6.14.1, I am not sure if I will
upgrade at this point. The large icon problem and slow screen re-draws are
the issues that got my attention the most. Fortunately I had made a system
restore point prior to my upgrade to 6.14.1 so reversing the update was easy
enough.

You're welcome.

You don't want to. ;o) I tried .14.1, but downgraded to .13.7,
mainly because of the redraw issue. WAY too slow. :o(
> Fortunately I had made a system restore point prior to my upgrade

I just installed .13.7 with it's exe again (I never use web update,
but always download the exe file and keep the last two versions).
Apart from the inconvenience that I had to do this twice there
where no problems at all. .13.7 is running fine (and fast) again.
:o)
[...MapSource Update]
> WebUpdate? I believe it only check for Firmware, GPS software,
> and the relates *not* MapSource program.
Misunderstanding. "Web update" meant "update via web". Have a
look at MapSource's "Help" menu -> "Check for Software Updates ..."
It seems that Garmin released a limited number of R&R disks with problems in
the
database. Those problems were not of a nature to cause major problems prior
to
MS 6.14.1 so those versions would execute. MS 6.14.1 is more pickey about
the
database and refuses to run when it discovers the corrupt database data.
You can easily get 6.14.1 to run if the R&R install is your problem. This
is
identified by the "Product 2" error. Fixing the "Product 2" error will get
you
a "Product 3" error so you will need to 'fix' both. All you have to do is:
1. For Vista 64:
Rename HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Garmin\MapSource\Products\2 to
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Garmin\MapSource\Products\x2
and
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Garmin\MapSource\Products\3 to
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Garmin\MapSource\Products\x3
For 32 bit systems the keys are:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Garmin\MapSource\Products\2 rename to
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Garmin\MapSource\Products\x2
and
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Garmin\MapSource\Products\3 rename to
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Garmin\MapSource\Products\x3
This will 'remove' R&R Alaska and R&R Hawaii from your registry as far as MS
is concerned
so you will not have access to that data using MS 6.14.1.
Of course the real solution is to replace the defective data by getting a
replacement
R&R disk from Garmin.
