On November 23, 1987, a local televised interview with Aquino
kicked off with a report that his mother "was engaged to a member of the
Waffen SS." Aquino flatly denies it. In 1929, after his mother, a
sculptor, graduated from Stanford University, he wrote in response to
the excoriations of a Temple defector, "she went to Germany to study as
an apprentice to the famous sculptor Georg Kolbe." Aquino neglects to
mention that Georg Kolbe, according to the Weisenthal Center, "adapted"
to Nazi rule just fine. Ms. Ford-Aquinoąs mentor indulged his art
throughout the Third Reich period "in the kind of monumental figures
whose cheap pathos was largely geared to the Nazi mythology of the
Nordic-Germanic 'master race." Kolbeąs studio was "a favored venue for
guided tours by members of the 'Strength through Joy' organization." A
beloved artist of the Nazi Party, he died in Berlin in November 1947.

Her maiden name was Ford? I read on some 'conspiracy' site (yeah, he he)
that Aquino's mother was/is Betty Ford. Of course I never believed it.
What was her first name?

Wonderful! If anything that sounds like a fascinating history. On another
note I was watching a documentary on french women after the war being hunted
down by the communists and having their heads shaven and then line up in
front of a graveyard and shot. I believe they called it a denunciation? They
were being murdered after the war for sleeping with german soldiers at one
point during the war. Many were simply maids or nanny's or worked in stores
in the nazi occupied areas of France and everyone knew they were sleeping
with the germans. After the war they were snitched on by locals and hunted
down and murdered by the communists. The purpose of shaving their heads was
to make them feel they were no longer part of the human race, neither
male/female was the significance of that particular punishment.

One either "adapted" to Nazi rule or one was basically dead meat.

Dr. Aquino's mother was indeed named Betty Ford (not the same person
as the wife of the former President, of course). She seems to have
been a very intelligent and creative lady. He has a nice collection of
her childhood poetry at: http://www.xeper.org/maquino/index.html

Thank you. Tani said her name was Lillian, but isn't that just another
variation of Elizabeth?

No, my mother never used the name "Lillian". She
was "Betty" to herself and everyone else; I don't think
I learned "Marian Dorothy Elizabeth Ford" until I was
just about an adult!

The battleaxe of the family was her mother, Sophie Ford.
San Francisco "aristocracy" of the Crocker/Stanford era,
and a _grande dame_ attitude to match. When she took
me as a little kid along with her shopping downtown, it
was only to certain stores (Macy's, City of Paris, Emporium,
Gumps, Magnin's), and she dressed to the teeth inc.
gloves, highbuttoned shoes, and veiled hat. Her buying
statement was always "Charge & send," and she couldn't be
bothered with charge cards; the store had better know who
she was. [Try that today!]

The funniest anecdote about her - which was attested
to by several German acquaintances - came when she
visited Mom in Berlin (where she was studying
sculpture) during the early 30s. They went to dine at
a posh restaurant [of course], and Sophie decided that
the party at the next table was too loud and rude, so
she went over and dressed them down with her usual
icy dignity. The restaurant went dead silent, until one
of the men at the table smiled and apologized to her.
He turned out to be Hitler, but my Grandma thought
politics vulgar and didn't recognize him. :-)

Today at the old main office of Crocker Bank (now a
Wells Fargo branch) in San Francisco, you'll see a
revolving door frame with a regular door in it. That
was the bank Grandma used; she taught piano to the
Crocker children. Once as a little kid I managed to
catch my head in the revolving door, and it took the
Fire Department to get me out. Grandma did her
Smaug the Dragon act to the bank staff, with the
result that they replaced it with a swinging door.
[Probably my most enduring legacy to the city of
S.F.] :-)

You have really interesting stories. Your familiy sounded like someone that
Kurt Vonnegut would have wrote about. If you haven't already, Vonnegut wrote
a book called "DeadEye Dick" it was always one of my favorites along with
"Hocus Pocus" and "God Bless You Mrs. RoseWater" these weren't futuristic
stories but mainly about people that were unusual in nature. You might enjoy
Vonnegut with your kind of history. Also "BlueBeard" was another story
similar. Have you ever written about your family and growing up in SF? I
think ut would make for some interesting reading.

Oh I almost forgot, I chose my screen name straight out of the "DeadEye
Dick" book. Circe Berman was a main character in that story.

There's a brief profane _Vitae_ at:

http://www.xeper.org/maquino/index.html

but nothing resembling an autobiography, because
I've been an idea-, not a personality-oriented
individual. In other words, I enjoy sharing ideas
with others which they may find of relevance and
usefulness to *them*; I'm not really interested in
trying to get anyone to focus on *me*.

This is, incidentally, reflected in the conceptual
design of the Temple of Set, which emphasizes
that it is a kind of "toolbox" for its Initiates to use,
not an enshrinement of any human personality.
As one of its founders and its initial High Priest,
I have to deal with a certain amount of "focus",
but Setians generally grow out of that fairly
quickly once they comprehend the Temple's
actual orientation to *their* personal initiation.

Well, I meant as far as history. I love stories that are real and detailed
even if they are some what personal. I have quite the imagination when I
start reading something that grasps my interest. You seem to have a great
appreciation, as I, for the not-so-status-quo. I enjoyed the stories you
posted about Egyptian history and Atlantis. I really believe there actually
was a city called Atlantis at one time.

Interestingly, many lose that "focus" I'm not sure if it is due to sheer
boredom or just not caring. I remember visiting the ToS website, it's been
some time now, and interested in the Egyptian history connection to the
"Set" belief. I, and others I'm sure look forward to any knowledge you
might care to share here.
