The Writings of The Island Story Teller - 3. On Spirit:
As I said in my post On Mission, I use the terms spirit and soul
interchangeably in my writings.
I go on to say that when I do so, I am referring to that part of the human
entity that is self. That essence of the person that some believe will
survive the body into eternity. It is the part of us that thinks. The
sentient bit.
Sentience is a consciousness of self, an awareness of one's existence as a
distinct entity in the universe. It is our sentient bit that defines us.
We know who we are.
So where do we keep our sentient bit? In our brains of course!
Or do we?
I was fascinated to learn of conjoined twin sisters Lori and George
Schappell who share a portion of their brain - some 30%. The portion they
share apparently includes the part that is attributed by science to be the
repository, or source, of one's personality. But science cannot account for
the fact that you will meet few people with personality differences greater
than the Schappell sisters.
Now in their 40's, one sister is distinctly feminine; the other declares
herself as quite masculine. One is an outgoing, gregarious soul and an
aspiring country singer. The other is a bookish, withdrawn soul who would
spend time playing video games or reading. They do not share thoughts. Each
has the ability to completely blot out any conscious awareness of her sister
who is joined to her physically at the head. Google these women, they are
truly inspirational!
The Schappell sisters are clearly two distinct persons despite their shared
cranial apparatus, and I believe that is because they have separate souls.
Separate spirits. As do we all.
So where does the brain come in? I believe it exists for the sole purpose of
connecting spirit and body.
Surely, it is possible that when one's brain gets muddled due to trauma,
chemicals, age or otherwise, it is merely a disruption in the connection
between spirit and body, rendering us with impaired personality - but only
to the extent that our spirit is reflected in the physical realm as
personality by the brain.
Think about that.
Spirit is not brain.
Personality is not spirit.
I believe that our spirit, connected to our body via the brain during our
time on Earth, is a distinctly separate entity and, as such, may survive the
death of the body.
We will explore this in future writings. But I will leave you with some
things to ponder:
Do you sense an affinity between your spirit and nature?
Why does your spirit celebrate the wonders and sites of nature, scenery and
universe?
Why does music move your spirit?
Are our spirits truly separate?
