I am thinking of getting a Magregor 26 to replace my existing yacht, can any
owner give me their opinions good or bad about these boats?

Sure, Ian. I am about to take delivery of a new 26X, and MacGregor has
fixed lots of problems and concerns which owners have raised over the
past few years. This means that the boat is a good one, without
disasters waiting to happen, but you need to be sure that this DESIGN
meets your boating needs, or else it might not be a good buy for you.
I would not recommend a used 26X because the resale prices are still
quite high, and the older 26X's have had numerous problems.

These new boats represent a sizeable cash outlay compared with what you
could get on the used boat market in another make or design. A major
component of the cost is the 50 HP motor, which is about $7,000.
However, if you need the capability for speeds up to 20 knots under
power, it's a wonderful idea. No other boat can do what this one can.
Just be sure you get the electronic fuel injected Evinrude (Suzuki)
engine, and NOT the 4 carburetor Yamaha
models, which are loaded with hassles. Be sure you NEED a trailerable
boat, and not a keelboat in a slip. A keelboat would be limited to
about 6 knots, and you have to pay more for the slip than to store the
trailer, but you could likely buy a real peach of a robust boat for
under $10k.
Be sure you like the idea of a flat, planing hull, which will allow
you to sail much faster than any keelboat under good conditions. Be
sure you like the cabin design, and
need the headroom, and that this presents no aesthetic difficulties for
you. The boat is lightly but adequately rigged. Do not expect to do
much ocean cruising, or that the rig will weather large or frequent
storms. Make sure you find a dealer that offers excellent support, and
who knows how to rig the boat and test it, so he can fix problems for
you. Go for a demo cruise of at least 3 hours duration. Don't expect
lots of fancy frills, teak, or extra weight in the design of either the
boat or trailer. Be prepared to fund any enhancements you desire, such
as shore power, a big electical system, electronics, genoa or spinnaker
sails, etc.

This boat should be perfect for my needs, as I will be sailing it at SF
bay, Tahoe, and Puget sound, and trailering it a moderate amount. I
plan to pay attention to the trailer (wheels, axle, hubs, bearings,
corrosion, etc.) to avoid problems. The rig tension is critical, and
must be checked before each sail. It's a perfect boat for a couple to
spend a few days or longer aboard. Get the video from your dealer or
from MacGregor.

Above all, pay no attention to the diatribes on these forums written by
the infamous "Capt Neal," relative to MacGregor products, as he has
almost no factual information generating his opinions.

While this person claims that they have fixed all the problems I would
still be cautious when buying a boat. I looked at the Mac seriously for
awhile and finally decided against it. Instead I bought a used Corsair
F-27 that is awsome. With a good sail inventory I have had my boat up to
22 knot. It is very stable, tows great, sets up in less time than the Mac,
and gets a lot more interest from everyone. It is not a keel boat. It is
a trailerable tri. I can sleep 6 inside and with the 19 foot beam there is
plenty of room for everyone. My children love the aft-cabin, It has a
marine head, two burner stove, and hardly ever heals past 15degrees. If
you want more info, and I suggest you look into these boat before buying a
mac email me, or check out www.Corsairmarine.com. buy the way the resale
value on the 27 is much better than the resale on a Mac

I too am considering a Mac26x early next year and wanted to know what
dealer you were going through. Arena Yachts? If so, how have them
been and how long did you have to wait for the boat once you placed the
order?

Thanks!
