I'm thinking of upgrading from my Jeanneau Sun Fast 20 to a JOD 24.

My sailing is mainly cruising and Sunday races on sheltered waters.

Any experiences on this boat ? Any site on the net where I can find
experiences or tests ?

Never really sold in big numbers as it was in a tough market against lots of
hot new sportsboat designs. This does mean however, that they can be bought
quite cheaply - FF 80,000 to FF 120,000 with trailer. And in fact, it is a
decent boat, quite well built. Some think it is a little heavy, but that is
probably no problem for your use.

I'll find you a link to some French Websites, with information, and some for
sale.

Thanks for your answer, Colin.

When you say it's a little heavy you are probably comparing it with Melges
24 or the new Beneteau 25, wich can actually "fly" over the water. The JOD
24 is neverthless lighter than the Surprise from Archambault, France.

Anyway I've also put this question at "fr.rec.bateaux", which is a french
newsgroup for boats and I've got some surprisingly unanimous answers. In
case your french is a bit rusty I'll translate them for you giving the
general
idea:

"... a failure as a race boat, got rid of it as soon as I could. Beyond 20
kn of wind, it switchs to liferaft mode..." <-- (that one is my favorite)

"... I agree... I think the Surprise instead is the ideal boat ..."

"... It's even worse, getting out of control very easily in the wind gusts,
with a lot of stuff breaking ..."

I'm sorry if the colorful french expressions they used lost some of
their freshness in the translation but I'm sure you got the general idea:
"OK, go ahead and buy one if you want to become a sailing kamikase...".

Well, well, well ...

Are'nt these opinions a little bit pessimistic ? But then why are they so
unanimous ?

I know very well what an unstable boat looks like. I'm sailing one for 6
years, a Jeanneau Sun Fast 20, 800 kg, with just an unballasted centerplate
and 270 kg of ballast at water level. And I still doped it with a 150% light
genoa and a simetrical spinnaker. All kind of wind gusts antecipation are
wellcomed...

Shall a JOD 24 be more demanding than this ? After all I don't intend to
cross the British Channel or go to the Biscay Bay with it, just sailing
around
Lisbon in our beautiful Tagus, from Cascais to Belem, with a little bit of
(more) style, maybe.

Best regards

Yes, I think that the opinions you quote, are over the top. The boat handles
very nicely for a racing boat. Of course, when you push hard, this type of
boat wants you to work hard, but it can be sailed in a very relaxed fashion.
It also looks neat! The hull shape is not distorted.

The Surprise is, for me, harder to handle. Not such a nice clean shape.

Yes, my comment about weight, is in comparison to very high performance
"sportsboat" types.

Do you know my good friend Justino Sa Machado in Cascais - company called
Tecnirepe. Amongst other things, they now sell J-Boats in Portugal.
Regards
Colin.
