We just picked up some travel and RV information from AAA about RV parks
in Baja, Mexico. Looks great, by the way. With this stuff we got a flyer
explaining the Mexican Vehicle insurance rules and insurance prices. Now
AAA's flyer, "Mexico Insurance-Why Do I Need It?", says that it cost $8
per -day- just for liability insurance. Plus another $4.50 per -day-, for
each $10,000 value of your rig, for physical damage to your rig (like
collision insurance). For a $50,000 truck/trailer combination we are
talking 8+(5x4.50) or $30.50 per -DAY- for insurance. Gezz, that's $915
per month! Do I have to mortgage my house to take a trip south of the
border?

Will somebody please explain to me how this is all wrong. I called AAA
and they were to get back to me. It is 6:20pm now so I won't hear from
them today.

Maybe if I buy a 1976 Ford Pinto and rent an army surplus Pup tent I'll
be able to afford a camping weekend in Baja, Mexico :-).

I'll start off by partially answering my own question. Found some good
info on Mexico insurance on:

http://math.ucr.edu/~ftm/bajaPages/Baja.Road.html#INSURANCE

Any additional info is more than welcome<g>.

re: Mexican Ins. I have some experience traveling to Baja. First of all
you will be amazed at the different type of landscape you will pass
through as you go down the peninsula. Awesome!

The trick to buying Mexican insurance (by the way, I think Mexican
insurance costs the same no matter from whom you buy it from, or where,
US, border, in Mexico, etc.) is you purchase only for the actual time you
are on the road. You don't need coverage while you are parked. In other
words if you plan to be there for 30 days, buy coverage for the first
day, (getting there), and for the last day, (coming back). You must know
your exact ETD and ETA. Now, as for comprehensive coverage, fire, theft,
etc. you would not be covered. Check with your local ins. agent for
that. You *may* be covered.

If you haven't driven in Mexico before, be sure to drive only in
daylight hours and remember, there are no shoulders!

Have a good trip and don' drink the water!
