My 1994 model Onan 4000 micro generator won't stay running. It starts
quickly, but once the start button is released, it stops. I think it must
have a fault in the ignition enable circuit of the electronic module. It
has the same problem whether started from the remote or from the genset
switch. I've disconnected the remote harness and also the oil level switch
with no effect. Any help would be appreciated. Please reply by email if
convenient. Thanks
Steve

My friend had the same problem and it turned out to be the rectifier had
died.

I had a similar problem with my 6.5 Onan. I found a bad component on the PC
board. New board was $299 from Onan...bought a rebuilt board from Flights
Systems in Pa. $55 with warrantee. They have a website and also rebuild
refrig. boards. Very professional.

I had very similar symptoms with my 1994 4000 last year. My solution was to
clean out the carburetor. I was told that this is a common problem caused
by infrequent usage. I now run the gen set at least 15 minutes a month.

Fifteen minutes isn't much. I don't know about the 4000, but on my
2800 Microlite the manual specifically calls for an exercise period of
two hours or more every four weeks, under at least half load. This is
two hours of continuous running, not several shorter periods.

The reason for this is not only to reduce the fuel problems you
mentioned, but also to heat up the generator portion itself (not the
engine) enough to drive out accumulated moisture.

Suggest your check your manual if you have one.

The same situation on mine was remedied by replaceing the fuel pump.
Seems the internal ground failed until the starter was energized and it
furnished the ground momentarily. Good luck!!!

I had the same problem...I thought it was the PC board but after spending
$300 on that it still did not work. I took it to a generator shop and they
replaced the brushes...works fine and only $60.00....I only wish I could get
my money back for the pc board......

My suggestion....take it to a professional before wasting money on
unnecessary parts...
