Has anyone had and solved a valve ping on a 1998 ford v-10 with bad valve
ping?

It has 70,000 miles on it, uses high test and have run injector cleaner
through it twice.

Ping occurs when in cruse control just as the speed is reached, some times
when accelerating (early when pulling hard and again as the speed is
reached), and s/t while decelerating (down hill od off).

Still get around 6-8 MPG, no power loss and other than the ping is a great
motor.

My next step is to go to ford! Any other suggestions?

Probaby your first step should be to go to Ford...I'm confused with your
issue, valve noise isn't a "ping", it's a clatter or chatter. Ping is a
pre-ignition knock, which could be caused of many different factors...your
truck needs to be diagnosed on the computer.

6-8 mpg? On what rig? I'm pleasantly surprised to hear that, as it's about
what I get despite driving over mountains and into severe headwinds, and
often quite fast, most of my trips. If you're getting just 6-8 in normal
driving, I guess I shouldn't feel guilty burning so many dead dinosaurs in
my 24-foot Winnie.

If you mean a ping that sounds like detonation, my 99 Ford V10 chassis
(18000# GVW) had a sound I identified to the Ford
warranty tech as "pinging". It would most often start near the bottom of
a hill when we started accelerating to gather more speed to go up the
next hill. To make a long story short, it turned out to be a known
problem with the fan belt vibrating under certain loads and rpm. (It
still SOUNDED like engine detonation to me, but was not at the right
place in the acceleration cycle). It was cured by replacing the fan belt
automatic tensioning idler pulley with one of a different size, and
replacing the fan belt. That noise has never recurred.

My warranty invoice shows they performed;
982314A Replace tensioner (F series)

My '99 went out of warranty in March 2002 but in September 2001 the cost
was covered fully. I also had the air cleaner shroud and air cleaner
replaced under warranty, as the old one has a history of allowing water
to get sucked in while driving in heavy rain. Also had the oil dipstick
replaced under warranty, as the old one showed the oil level to be 1/2
quart low. TSBs cover these last two items too.

I'm not sure if you are charged for work covered under TSB after warranty
has expired or not....

Not at all...this sound was very abnormal, sounded just like a detonation
ping to me...has not recurred in 3 years after the fix.

Another item that will cause a ping type rattle under those conditions is a
worn spring in the PVC valve. If the PVC valve is original it's due.

Thanks to everyone that send a note.

When Barrie B said it was a bad belt and pulley, I thought I would try
lubing the belt. I grabbed the first spray bottle in the cabinet, and
sprayed 303 Protectant on it. It hasn't made another sound since.

Traveled 700 miles since trying the 303 and still going good, no rattle
sound at all. I even went back to regular gas!

I'm now going to get a new belt and keep the old on for emergency!

So thanks for helping, and if the question comes up again. Try the belt
first. It didn't cost anything to try.

Thanks for the tip! If it ever happens to me again, I'll try lubing the
belt...it beats paying for the service out of my pocket. And it's
interesting that 303 should be a good lube; I'd never have thought of
that! :-)
