1.1 Advertising on the net
Jerry writes
---------------------------
Banjoguy, banj...@aol.com writes:
>I have a new product for RVs but am told I could not advertise it on
>the Internet. Is this true or is there a special area for advertising?
Jerry <je...@peachnet.edu> writes
You pays your money and you takes your chances.

There is or will soon be no rule that says you can not send commercial
traffic (advertisement or otherwise) on the net. The rule was there when
the Federal Government (under the name of the National Science
Foundation) paid for the nationwide backbone. This payment is being
turned off and so is the rule in most places.

This has led some enterprising companies to believe that they can send
their messages indiscriminately across the net. Fortunately or
unfortunately as you choose to believe, there are millions of people that
read these news groups and not one of them want to see their
communication media turned into a wasteland of junk mail messages from
overly aggressive companies so they use some very persuasive methods to
keep the junk (read advertisements) off the net. If you have not heard of a
flame, just try to send a message (any message) to hundreds of news
groups at once (called spaming). You will find your machine in the turned
off state very quickly as all those millions that you send to can return the
favor just as easily and their messages frequently include the electronic
equivalent of a brick [usually called a 10 Megabyte core dump but other
files have been used]

Thus you may conclude that advertising on the net is a bad thing to do. On
the other hand, There are many that find the participation of companies
very beneficial (I do) so long as they are courteous and consider the
feelings of others. I suspect that many on this group would welcome a
solution to their problems (that is the reason for most posts) thus you and
anyone else are welcome to participate in the discussion and offer
solutions. Just join in the discussions and offer help where you can and
identify yourself as a salesperson for the solution offered. Following this
procedure you will probably find many friends that will thank you for your
help by purchasing your product.

My suggestion is to start a World Wide Web server and put a full
description of your product with pictures there. Then post a small notice
in the group (or send the URL to Ralph and he will put it in the FAQ) that
tells where to find more information. People only get angry when they are
forced to pay money or time to read about a product they care nothing
about.

Just remember nice people get nice responses and vice versa.

Just my opinion - I don't speak for the trees or the net.

Ralph writes
--------------------------
While there are few rules in Usenet, posting an ad for an unrelated
product to a newsgroup is a certain way to make enemies. I can say for
certain that as of this writing (two weeks after the creation of
rec.outdoors.rv-travel) one persons un-related ad to rec.outdoors.rv-travel
has cost him his net access. I can and will complain to the site admin of
any poster that sends out an unrelated ad. Many providers cancel accounts
for this activity.
I will include pointers (email or a URL) for related businesses in the
FAQ. In addtion there is a newsgroup made just for marketing your outdoor
related item. <news:rec.outdoors.markplace>

1.5 Net Access on the Road
---------------------------
2.3 On Road with the INTERNET
...or... I donšt want to lose my net connection while Išm on the road, what
can I do?
Ralph writes:

Choosing a provider:

The first thing to remember is that it's not going to be as cheap or
good as your home to your local connection. As far as I'm concerned there
is not `right' answer, and only maybe `wrong' answers.
You can continue to get service from your current provider. Most of
the large national providers have local numbers in most urban areas,
however only a few rural areas are covered. This certainly mean a long
distance call to your `national' provider when you are staying at Snow
Bank Alaska.
You could also call your current provider long distance via a number
of plans. All three of the `biggies' offer long distance discount plans, one
where all calls to a particular town (say where you live and your service
provider is) could be a good idea.
Another good idea is the personal 1-800 numbers. These can be set up
to call any number you chose, like your providers. You certainly want one
where a PIN or password is required.
You could sign up with a provider that offers 1-800 access. Or you
could go with one of the providers that offers `free' access. These
providers get their money via profit sharing with the long distance
provider and some restrict which provider can be used.

Finding a Phone Jack at the RV park
Good luck.
This is `real new' stuff here as far as most parks are concerned. I've
yet to see a phone at any RV park that was set up to allow a modem to be
added or removed easily. Many parks don't have phone lines to each site.
Perhaps some parks could add phones for the travelers, with all but 1-800
type long distance locked out.
Another option is the cradle modem. One of these would allow you to
use any phone, even a pay phone.

In closing Trailer Lifešs home page has a listing, that they are working
hard at keeping up to date, of all known parks that are on-line friendly.
