Is there a problem leaving the tailgate on and down on a ford pickup
when hauling a 10 foot truck camper?

Thanks.

Just find out where the Center of Gravity is for the camper. I assume you are
putting it on an 8' bed. If so, and it does not hit anything, you are fine.
If it is a shortbed, you have too big a camper for the truck. I have an 8 1/2'
Starcraft on a shortbed Ford, and it is fine. I leave the tailgate down, and
there is no problem. I would recommend either plywood, or 2X10's to help
distribute the load a little more evenly.

Good luck.

Dahhhh

Thanks for your responses...

After trying to load the camper, with the tailgate on, I discovered
that the supports for the tailgate get in the way of the back of the
camper, and prevent the camper from being fully loaded.

Should have thought of that before I tried to load it that way...

Depends on the configuration of the camper. Many hang lower than the bed
behind the truck and therefore require removal of the tailgate. If the
tailgate won't be in the way, I can't think of any concern with leaving it
on. My 11'10" camper requires tailgate removal. It has the holding tanks
sticking out the rear. Not really a big deal as the tailgate comes off in a
matter of seconds. They are kind of heavy to carry and then you do have to
store them somewhere. Check the slide-in camper forum over at www.irv2.com
for lots of great info.
