Time to replace the whole house H20 filter in my 1 year old DutchStar so I
call the dealer. They want $40 for a 9 3/4" x 2 3/4" filter. I asked about
'alternatives' and got somewhat of a blank stare so off I go on the Net.
The dealer tells me you just can't buy any ol' replacement filter. I don't
agree but..........

The current filter says KX Industries on the cap ends but no part number.
I've visited their website & emailed them with no help. I called Newmar
direct & was surprised when they would NOT tell me which filter from KX
Industries it was so I go do a little research. Newmar ONLY gives that info
to their dealers. Another Newmar dealer tells me they no longer use KX
Industries but someone else.

This is becoming a PITA as there are lots of replacement filters out there.
Camping World carries Culligan but again, is it a standard fit?

Any experience in this area would be appreciated. I realize there is a wide
variety of needs from simple carbon or paper to sophisticated carbon block
and more. Filtering out Cryptosporidium and Giardia cysts are
considerations but I think primarily the taste is important & I don't want
just a trickle of water from the shower.

TIA...........

If you don't worry about anything but taste, why not buy drinking water in
jugs, and just remove the filter.

On the other hand, if you do want to filter, get the exact measurement of
the filter cartridge from end to end. Go to Lowes or Home depot, or
Wall-Mart and buy one that filters what you want filtered.

Personally, I want the bugs and the heavy metals filtered out, and $35 to
$40 is about the price for those filters at the box stores.

I'm surprised that you are still using the original filter after a year.
Newmar uses a combination sediment-carbon block filter that passes water
through it so slowly that you're sure to anger anyone behind you in line
to get water. We replaced ours with a simple sediment filter from Home
Depot that cost 3 or 4 dollars and threw the original in the trash, even
though it was only about a month old. There's no need to run all of
your water for your toilet, shower, dishes, etc. through a carbon
filter. Add a drinking water faucet with a carbon filter if you don't
already have one, and get a sediment cartridge for your whole house
filter to protect your water pump.

Are they "standard" 9 3/4 x 2 3/4? Interchangeable???

Most of the so called high end" filters are rated @ 1 GPM. Is that enough
for a REAL shower, etc.?
