Have Jeep Wrangler all set to flat tow behind MH but am not sure about
transmission setting. Have heard to use first, fourth and neutral. I
understand that transfer case should be in neutral. Explanation was that by
putting tranny in a gear it would keep unit lubed. Anyone have the right
answer.

Thanks

Bill,
Late model Wranglers with a manual transmission should be in neutral with
the transfer case in neutral. The key should be turned one notch in the
clockwise direction to the "on" position so the steering is unlocked.

Bill

You did not say what year or model wrangler Yj or TJ if it is a YJ the proper
condition is
1. transfer in netural
2. trans in 4th It is to keep the gears from turning not to lube them. If you
put it in netural then the slight drag in the gear box will cause the gears to
turn. Now that probably will not hurt any thing unless you tow it from Ny to Ca
at 90 plus with out stopping. But the manual says in 4th.
3. steering unlocked key in off position but still in the ignition.
4. If it is a YJ you can reach under the dash and release the quick disconnect
on the speedo. If it is a Tj with electronic speedo it won't register any way.
I have not read the manual on the newer TJ's but the transfer and gear boxes
are the same.

I had my Chrysler dealer answer that one before I tood my Wrangler on
the road. They told me neutral and neutral. Also, be sure, especially
for the first few thousand miles, you check the bolts holding the tow
assembly to the Jeep. If they loosen they can crack because of the
leverage put on them. Almost lost my Jeep into the St. Joe river that
way.

Good luck,
Brad

That's not correct. The owners manual section contains instructions for
flat towing. It says that for my 1999 Wrangler Sahara 4.0L with a standard
transmission that the transfer case should be in neutral and the
transmission IN gear. It has a section for automatic transmissions that I
believe says to put the transmission in park and transfer case in neutral.

We flat tow our 97 jeep wrangler and we put the T-case in neutral and the
transmission in 5th. We were told not to put it in 1st in cae something
happened, it's not in that low gear at high speed.

While running, go one click back on the key.

I own a 2000 Wrangler Sport with a
manual transmission. I flat tow it far
more than it is driven.

According to the owner's manual, the
Jeep should be towed with:
1. the key turned to the first position
2. the transfer case should be in
neutral
3. the transmission should be in first.

Upon calling Jeep (the company, not the
dealer) we were advised to do the above,
but put the transmission in fourth.

There is a great deal of debate about
all this.

Do what you believe. Any Jeep dealer has
a copy of the owner's manual.

I tow a Jeep Wrangler behind my motorhome, transfer case in neutral,
transmission in first gear.
Be Very Careful to verify transfer case is in neutral before towing. Put
vehicle in gear, engine running, release brake and clutch, vehicle should
not move. Sounds simple, but I suspect failure to do this is the reason I
had an engine fire while towing.

The reason for the Jeep to be in gear, as I was told, is:
How far do you think you would go, if you had it in gear and forgot to put
the transfer case in neutral. Only a few feet, because you would hear the
Jeep tire's squealing. This is per Remco.
