Can anyone advise on the infamous manifold problems with the Chevy 454
engines. I just purchased a 1987 Winnebago Chieftain 27'. Any suggestions
on a "cheap" fix for thr problem. Are headers from Gibson or Jaddine a good
option answers would be greatly appreciated.

I also purchased a new, to me, MH this past spring. I entered a note in another RV
newsgroup and asked a similar question. The majority of the replys I received stated
that the best way to go is with a Gale Banks Power Pack System! It consists of full
flow stainless steel headers, large diameter pipes, very low restriction muffler and
a cold air induction unit. The system is not cheap, but you will gain lots of HP,
torque, reduction in engine temp (200-300degrees) and some increase in fuel economy.
My understanding is that it's the way to go by far......

They do a good job as advertised. However the Banks system is high
priced. We looked at others at the Harrisburg PA show last week..
They look to be as good but as much as $500 less. I am thinking of
installing one shortly. The performance improvement would be well
worth it.

200-300 degree drop, most engine's run at 200-210, to 240 hot. But
headers/exhaust will give you big increase in power, probably 2 mpg
increase, and a cooler running engine, just not 200 degrees!

I believe that the 200 degree figure is refering to the temperature of
the exhaust manifolds themselves which run much hotter than the 200 +
degree water in the cooling system.

Bill, The Banks system is good, just too expensive. Also, I doubt a

200-300 degree drop, most engine's run at 200-210, to 240 hot. But
headers/exhaust will give you big increase in power, probably 2 mpg
increase, and a cooler running engine, just not 200 degrees!

I'd save your money and get a Jardine Exhaust system. Same thing as the
Banks, same quality, guaranteed for life, much less expensive. I had a
local muffler shop install it on my motorhome in 3 hrs. Please e-mail
me for more info. As a proir customer, I can get you a discount by
referring you.
Thanks, Bob
