Big Jim,

I live in the far south, SCarolina, where things are sometimes rigged,
Appalacian-style. Not always to be trusted for safety out on the great plains
or across the desert. I imagine replacing rims would be expensive. I don't
know how long I will keep this rig, so would like to stay with reasonable
replacement costs. I wonder why they used these 16.5 wheels to begin with?
And the 800 tire?

For the short term, If you live far north, I've heard that 16.5s are
more available in Canada than in the US.<<

Sue...Be sure the chassis maker hasn't required NON-Radial tires for
your rig, as they did for my older Dodge w/800x16.5 tires. Evidently, if
non-radials are required, and you use radials, there could be some kinda
major problem! I got mine last year at Winston Tires. They are holding
up fine, so far, KOW!!

Thanks for the warning, but my rims have "radial" stamped on them. I have used
radials for 6 years on my '88 class C. They ride like clouds compared to bias
ply. Funny how we can get used to luxury so easily!

Big Jim 'splained why we don't put radials on rims -not- rated for
radials!
Thanks for the specifics, Big Jim!!

I heard that the familiar brown UPS delivery truck rides on 16.5"
wheels...if so, there should be a good supply for some time to come!

Okay, I'll be looking at those tires the next time I see a UPS truck. I'll
check to see what brand they use. Thanks,

If you have a Winston tire store, they should have them.

Thanks for the suggestion. I don't know of a Winston store, but my local
stores all seem to get their tires from the same distributor, who has Firestone
Steel Tex, which I am seriously considering. I found their web site and they
say they are superior (of course). They are the best quality I have found in
this size. Any reason not to use them?

Thanks all, for your ideas/advice. I ended up getting the Firestone Steel Tex
for a very good price (just under $600 for 6, incl. mounting, et al). One of
the benefits of being here in the South. The Firestone web site was a good
resource too.(Firestone-usa.com). The ride home was nice and smooth. It feels
good to have brand new rubber underneath. Next we'll try them out across the
continent.

See ya on the road.
