Looking for suggestions for checking pressure and filling 16' dual wheels on
27ft Class C motorhome.
Wheels have wheel liners.
Inside nipple extends straight out.
Outside dual stem is sticking inwards.
It isn't going to be easy i think

Don't know about the wheel liners, but the first thing you need is a truck
type tire gauge. The one with the double ended head that is just a bit off
of parallel with the gauge stem. Push it on to the inner valve stem, pull
it on to the outer one that is pointed in.

Others will probably advise of the down side of wheel trim covers. After
reading this ng for a while I got rid of my wheel covers.

Others will have other opinions ..... Here? - always!

You may not like my answer, but I'd store the "wheel liners" for the
day you decide to sell, and just paint the wheels. Some people think
I am daft to say so, but we got compliments on the appearance of our
last rig and could get at both the tire valves and lug nuts without
tin in the way.

I advise against the rubber-hose extenders. If everything is perfect
they work OK, but installation is critical and if they leak or come
loose you may lose a tire - or more. If you MUST have extenders and
want to keep yer shiny tinwork, consider installing the solid brass
long valve stems bent to poke through the wheel holes.

I don't know all the answers - but you don't know
all the questions either, right?

I still have my shiny tin on but I agree. After reading this I think I'm
also going to shed the tin. Last summer before leaving on a trip I re-aired
my tires. Later in the day as I walked by the rig I heard a hissing sound,
even though I'm beginning to lose my hearing. I found that the screw on
extension was leaking and it has bothered me ever since. I always wonder as
I'm driving down a rutted road if that inside dual is low on air or if it's
just the road throwing me around. Tomorrow morning I think I'll take off the
tin and get rid of the extensions. You've got some good ideas Mr. Sill.
Sometimes I cringe at your sarcasm but I owe you one for my peace of mind on
this one.

You might want to check these two items out...dual head truck type gauge
and also extended dual air filler:

http://www.bobstools.net/prd1020.htm
http://www.bobstools.net/prd1067.htm

Also your own air compressor.

You need a Dual Foot Tire Pressure Guage, available at most auto parts
stores. Get a good one. Check tire pressure often. Don't equip flexible
valve stem extenders, they may leak. Mine did, flat tire. IMHO.

Those items work in many, maybe most situations, but not all. I have
Alcoa wheels that have small holes that preclude the use of any gauge
or inflator that has any kind of angle to it. I have seen an
inflator/guage that has offset, straight heads in use but have not
been able to find any supplier that has it. I have used the steel
braided extensions for over ten years with no problems....

Thanks for all the good help.
Bob's Tools looks promising (web sites below)
The Air Chuck-Dual head Straight foot will work to put air in if I can just
terminate it in a standard valve stem.
And the Gage-Service will get to the outward looking stem on the inside
dual.

I don't have wheel liners - just keep my rims painted nice (looks better IMHO)

I DO have the brass valve extenders for the inside dual - and they are
great! Real easy to check and fill now.
Note, this is NOT the hose extension setup which can be a real bummer -
just a simple 3 inch brass extension which makes the valve easily
accessible.

So, if you don't use extenders, how do you get to the inner valve? I'd have
to crawl in on my belly to get to mine - makes checking tire pressure often
difficult.

I plan on using a thing called an Air Chuck Dual head Straight Foot from
Bob's Tools
at www.bobstools.com/prd1020.htm
I'll put a valve stem on the other end and fill with a standard air hose. .
. .
at least that's the plan
Hope to be able to check tire pressure same way

Another option can be found at http://www.linkmfg.com - it's called a
Cat's Eye Tire Pressure Maintenance System. The disadvantage I see to
this is that the sensor is preset to a specific pressure so if you're
adjusting your tires based on load you're out of luck.

I'm having difficulty find those solid brass valves for 16" rims. Anyone
know where to get them. 2 tire dealers tell me they are available only
for 19" rims.

Thanks

I have no help here - but avoid those two tire dealers if you can - any
"real" tire dealer has valve extenders on hand, and if not, can get them
the next day.
These guys sound like amateurs to me.

I bought a set at my local NAPA dealer. I don't recall if they were
in stock or not, but I do recall that the ones I got were not a
perfect fit. Memory is a bit weak but I THINK it was necessary to
drill the hole in the wheel to a slightly bigger size to accomodate
the available long stems. That MAY be why your tire dealers are
telling you that stuff.
