We have decided ( really too late for a good solution ) that we need to
utilize the extra U-dinette area for sleeping. I understand the optional
folding table serves this purpose, but I will likely just be cuting some
wood for our trip at the end of the week.

I measured the opening and it looks like the folding table should be
approximately

39" length
19 " width
3/4" heigth

anyone know if this is a generic size for a folding table? Something I
coudl grab enroute? Or anyone know Jayco's pricing?

Stephen,
We have a 12UDK and George just cut two boards to fit in the U. I don't
know the price of those Jayco tables but I thought they were a little
pricey. If we are going camping and need to use that area as a bed, we
just grab the boards and pack them. We don't use that area for sleeping
often and did not see any sense in buying a table to use as a bed.

We also just cut two boards to fit in the U and painted them light blue, to
match the color scheme of our 10UD.
Then we went to the dealer we bought the trailer from and purchased a used
table top and single adjustable leg that we use outside next to the stove.
We paid less than $20.00 USD for the used table.

Why two boards? Portability? I am of course concerned about weight, but
I also figured if I cut a nice piece of wood to fit, that I could add a
pedestal leg later if we wanted to use it as a table too.

I am pretty sure the fiberglass OEM from Jayco would be more money that
I care to spend right now (especially since I need to figure out how to
cut off the locking hitch pin because someone lost the keys... oops I
digress).

So do both of you have two boards that are ~ 39" long by 10" wide laying
side by side? that might work with just some scrap that I have it
probably wouldn't even have to support the center (strong boards).

We do have the table top with the single adjustable peg leg. That
usually stays outside the camper next to the stove though. Anyone else
find a solution for protecting yourself from that stupid aluminum table
top bracket (when in "table" mode). The edges are SHARP!

I have Flagstaff 208 which is a 10ft. U-dinette also. My unit has
under the end seat of the U-dinette a board that is hinged and flips
over for sleeping. Then I store the pedistal table under the
U-dinette at night or behind the sink. May be a solution to your
problem.

Good Luck

Dave

Two boards 10" wide laying side by side is easier to find than 1 board 20"
wide. Don't need to join the boards with biscuits or dowels because the
only time it us used is for sleeping. If the person sleeping on the bed
isn't too large you shouldn't need center support, keep it simple. Clean the
sharp edge with a file or Dremel tool.

For my 12UDK I cut a piece of plywood -- one board to fit. I keep it stored
under the seat cushion at the "bottom of the U".

Why 2 boards?

Also, if I wanted to make a table out of my board, I'd just find a cheap
table and rob the foldable legs.

I opted for a $5 investment for this upcoming week.
Home Depot had a nice 4' x 18" pine plank. Very light and study, hardly
flex'ed at all when I stood on it with 1 edge lifted and a laminate on
both sides. I had them cut it at 39". I had hoped they would do a
nicer cut than I would, but it definately needs a bit of sanding. Then
again I don't have to worry about pulling out my table-saw, or using my
radial saw, or hand cutting .... and it fit nicer in my wagon to take
home. :)

So it is 39" x 18" and 3/4" thick. I would have preferred 20" width
with 1" notches out of two corners (dogeared), but coudln't find any
wood I liked. It should work out great, especially considering the
price.

I had a 10" board 1" thick. Don't use any brace, haven't had a problem
with it sagging. The 2 boards are likley also easier to store. It was
just one time when we knew that we needed to sleep a 5th person. This
was a easy, cheap solution.
