This is a tad off-topic, but at least it involves camping (sort of) and our
pop-up camper.

We will be busy this week getting ready for our annual Relay For Life to
benefit the American Cancer Society. We will use our pop-up for the fifth
year this year as the home base for my wife's team from her school. The
Sandy Hill School team has already banked over $ 7,800 and they should total
over $ 8,000 in fundraising this year.

The Relay For Life is a twenty four team walk event. The opening ceremonies
are very moving. If there is a Relay in your area, I encourage you to form
a team or otherwise get involved - you will not regret the experience. A
pop-up makes a great base camp!

Dear Kirk,

I am a recovering leukemia patient and have been thinking about getting
involved in one of these events.
We have a pop-up camper as well, and have just started using it again this
year as I am feeling much better these days.

Could you give me some details as to how you combine your pop-up with being
involved with the event?

Thanks

Dane,

Our Camplite is the meeting, eating, greeting, and resting place for Nancy's
team. When not walking or off visiting around the "campground" inside the
local high school track, the team members gather in and around the camper.
Nancy and the team usually decorate the camper and campsite for some theme.
Friends drop by and visit. We eat a picnic dinner and there is a campsite
competition where judges come around and vote for the best campsite in
various categories. They even manage to sleep, either inside the camper
(about 11 people can pack in there) or outside on lawn chairs. When not
walking, they simply hang out. Just like "real" camping! We have a
slideout dinette so the extra space is great for this. We bring along a
picnic table of our own for eating outside and make the dinette into a bunk.
We use the awning if the weather will be mild and not windy.

I will set up Friday - the walk begins that night. Nancy comes after school
closes and the team starts gathering around 5 pm. Opening ceremonies take
place around 7 pm and closing ceremonies take place around 11 am Saturday.
I pack up the camper as the closing ceremonies finish. We usually are back
home by 2 pm Saturday.

If you want, my wife can get you much more information about how Relay
actually works - about forming a team and so on. This is her thing; I just
stay out of her way and help when I can. I am VERY proud of her for this.
The Sandy Hill gang raised over $ 8,000 this year!

We started Relay by being on a team 5 years ago. The following year Nancy
and a friend at work formed their own team for the first event in our city.

Let us know if we can help you any more, and we will pray for your continued
recovery.

Kirk and Nancy
