We have a new Jayco Eagle 12SO and went camping this past Memorial Day weekend.
We also have a 10mos. old daughter. We thought that the safest place for her
to sleep would be in our King Size bed. However my wife woke up in the middle
of the night to find her on the very edge of the camper (above our heads) ...
she moves alot when sleeping and we also found that some of the velcro had been
undone. We don't know how this happened. Thank goodness my wife woke up and
grabbed her.. Next time we'll put her in the part of the camper that she can't
fall out of.

Has anyone else had problems with the velcro coming undone and falling out of
the beds?

When our youngest was a baby, we had an old large Viking Tent Trailer.
At that time, we had a portable crib for her. It fit well where
the dinette table was, when the table was removed. When traveling,
it folded up to the size of a small tent folded up. When assembled,
it was about 2/3 the length of a regular crib and 2/3 the width.
I don't remember where we got it from or what it cost.

Many years ago, my parents had a '69 Starcraft Pop-up. My sister, about 2
years old, fell out of the camper by slipping between the bed and tenting
and landed on the tongue of the trailer. She was unhurt, didn't even cry.
Just came to the door and knocked to be let back in.

this is one of the better points concerning Coleman's, no velcro used on
bunk ends, it's very difficult to undo the Coleman hold down cords from
inside the unit.

Thanks Pat..... I was about to post the same message.

My 2 year old rotates so much when sleeping, we put him in the rear King
Bunk on the RIO because if he falls out to the inside he will land on the
Dinning couch.... With the Coleman and the Bungee cord attachment, he
sometimes gets in the "Crack"... But I KNOW he can't fall out. Unless Dad
forgets to hookem up !!

When our kids were young we had a 1987 Starcraft Starflyer. I cut a
piece of plywood that fit between the dinette seats blocking off the end
of the dinette. We then put cushions down on the floor between the
dinette seats making a small "playpen" . This worked very well and even
if my daughter woke up she couldn't wander around the camper. We stored
the table outside at night.

I've got a 99 jayco eagle 10UD. If the velcro isn't overlapping properly on
the bunk ends (e.g. not enough of the 1 inch wide strip applied directly
over/on the opposing strip), the velcro may not hold. There is a lot of
tension on the velcro as it basically holds the tenting to the bunks and keeps
the vinyl tight. When the internal tenting braces are raised, that puts lots of
tension on the velcro on the bunk ends. The velcro strip is approximately 1
inch wide. I feel that as long as at least 3/4 of an inch of Velcro to Velcro
overlap exists, the there should be a secure hold.

We always velcro the tenting before raising the internal tent support rods.
That way we know that the velcro will be very secure. (We visually inspect the
attachment) Also be sure that the bunk end velcro (outside edge) is attached
before overlapping the sides (right and left) underneath.

When breaking camp, we sometimes find that the tenting is difficult to pull
apart from the bunk ends due to the strength of the velcro "bond".

Hope this helps. Have fun and above all please give that wonderful little 10
month old baby girl a hug for me. I've got a 5 yr old girl. Girls are
special.

I have to agree with Duane about the velcro. The canvas fits so snugly around
the bunk ends, you cannot fall out. We have a difficult time attaching the
canvas if the bunks are pulled all the way out. The velcro fits very tight, it
is difficult to pull off while breaking down. I am sure you can find a small
port-a-crib to put the baby in for the night.

Just to add my 2 cents worth to this thread:

The tenting fabric on my new '99 Starcraft Venture 1706 is PERMANENTLY
attatched to the ends of the bunks. Only the sides of the tenting
attatch to the bunks with bungee cords. This makes it impossible for
anyone to fall out of the ends (also helps keep the bunks dry if you
have to pack up in the wet!) I am not sure if all Starcrafts are
assembled like this, but I believe the new models are. Do any other
manufacturers have the fabric permanently fastened to the bunk ends?

The Rockwood we have the canvas is secured (like an awning) permenantly
to the end of the beds, and the sides are velcro. With the zippers
closed and the velcro on I am not sure how one would fall out, but
anything is possible I guess.

When I was younger we had a colman popup that my younger brother rolled
out of the end. But this was as we were putting it up. Though the best
place for him was on the bed once the bed was up...

Yes, my Rockwood has the permanantly attatched end. Our previous
Coachman did not and we lost our little dog out of the back end of the
bunk one night. Thankfully she was not hurt, but very shook up;
understandably so. We also appreciate that this trailer has the
permanantly attatched end pieces!

I have a 94 Starcraft and they are assembled like the 99. If secured properly
NOTHING should fall out! Bungee cord keeps tenting nice and tight!

Viking is the only other manufacturer that fastens the tent to the bunk. My
old 76 Bonair was the same. Have three kids and haven't lost one yet!

We camped with our 3 yr ols boy and 4 month old daughter.

Used a bed rail for the king bed (like what you would use at home for
children/toddlers). Worked great. Also used car seat for 4 month old to sleep
in. Put car seat or any strap in chair on fold down bed.

Worked great!

I'm no great fan of Palomino, but their tenting is attached to the beds...end
and both sides.

Naw, neither velcro nor bungie will do. Ya gotta permanently attach her
jammies to the bunk ends to adequately keep her put :-)

Years ago when my son was 2, and we had a Skamper popup he fell out.
The tenting was just held down by bungies that spanned across the
bottom of the bunk which allowed a gap if the tenting was pushed on.
Fortunatly he was unharmed and we all can laugh at the whole thing as
it was early dawn when it happened and my wife ran out in her
underware..just to find our son laughing since he landed in soft dense
grass. But seriously, on my new Starcraft, the tenting is secured much
better and it would be very difficult for a small child to fit through.

maybe a blow up swimming pool for kids would be a good crib / playpen
for the tots, can be used to cool off in in daytime too. I took mine
everywhere when my kids were little, cookie crumbs shake out great too!
Must be careful w/ anything plastic too.
happy trails........
