Any words of wisdom? I'm looking into a 1998 Durango with tow package and
the 5.9L Magnum V-8 engine. Anyone with experience towing with it?

The Durango is a super tow vehicle. I have a 1999 Durango, 5.9L with the tow
package and it handles great. Good luck

We have a 99 with the 5.2L, and it does great towing our 2500 lb Santa Fe. We
have put about 41K miles on it, with no problems.

Chris we tow our 00 Niagara with a 98 Durango 5.2L with towing package and
tows very well. Doesn't even know it is back there. Gas mileage is bad but
the 98 Durango is bad gas mileage without a trailer. 3:92 gears may have
something to do with that. But as I said as far as being up to the job there
is no question about that. Miles

Friends of ours have the same vehicle (engine etc) and tow a 28 foot
Bayliner boat with it, and have had no problems at all. Their boat has a
head, bar, sleeps 4 & has 2 inboard motors on it. They LOVE their Durango!
Good luck

I have a 2000 Durango to tow my 2000 Coleman Bayside. The dealer talked me
into a Reese friction sway control but I'm not sure I need it. I hardly
know the trailer is back there unless I hit a really big hill. Big trucks
blow by and the trailer stays solid. I also had a brake controller
installed. The brakes on the Durango are sort of weak and I would
definitely recommend a trailer with brakes and a brake controller.

Hi Chris,

We love our 2000 Durango. It pulled our pop-up out to Seattle and back with
no problems at all. We had two preteens and one 6' teenager. The seats
worked out great, because the boys could sit in the back - fold one of the
seats up and have leg room enough for the older one. And our youngest
daughter still had plenty of room with the remaining seat and middle
section. We also used it to pull a U-Haul to move our daughter to NC -
again, it pulled well. We had some initial problems with a leak - I don't
remember where, but it had to do with putting the vehicle in reverse and
hearing funky noises, but the dealer fixed it and we've had no other issues
since.

We got ours without the tow package - according to our dealer, it was
cheaper to go get a hitch installed than to go with the package. The only
extras we have are the electric drivers seat and the cd player/stereo
system.

If gas weren't so crazy - we'd probably have two. We average 15-16 when not
towing and less when we do. We were told to only tow with the OD off.

Hope you find what you're looking for. We waited and planned for 3 years
before getting ours.

Chris,
I have a 2001 Durango with the 4.2L. It towed the pop up full up and itself
packed solid with hunting gear. The 2407 was hardly noticeable. I did use
a Reese 350 mini (damn the warranty). No electric brakes were installed on
the trailer.
The reason for my post is that I remember you wanting to trade trailers for
a full size TT. The short wheel base of the Durango may be a problem with a
longer trailer. There was a gentlemen on rec.outdoors.rv-travel who posted
an article regarding a friend pulling a 28' TT without a Hensley Arrow and
ended up flipping the trailer on the highway. Your '98 5.9L with tow
package certainly has the brawn to pull.....but I would invest in a Hensley
if you go to the 'hard side'.

Happy trails,

Hi Chris,

As you can see, we have a '98 Durango. We did not get the tow package,
because when we bought it we had no idea that we'd be towing anything. We've
only towed it around Wisconsin and a trip to Michigan, so there were no
mountains involved, just some hills, but it tows fine. There is hardly any
sway. The only problem we had with it is the electric windows in front
didn't work a couple of times, but the controller or whatever was repaired
under warranty. There was also a recall for the straps on the gas tank where
they could come loose, so you might want to make sure that was checked.

Overall, we think the Durango is a great vehicle.

I'm working on one right now (at a shop) that overheats when over 100
degrees outside, also the trans is overrevving going into 3rd and it sounds
like it's going to have to have a trans overhaul. This baby only has 56000
miles on it. Hope the cleaned out radiator, new thermostat, and updated fan,
shroud, and fan clutch cure the overheating condition. Looks like a tough
vehicle but my 94 CrownVic with 130000 miles doesn't overheat or shift
funny.

Chris, a buddy of mine has the 5.9l. He gets 11mpg w/out towing. Nice truck
but gets worse mileage than my suburban...

Well my van gets 8 mpg and my Pathfinder gets 12, so I'm saving money!
Yippee!

We tow our Wanderer with a 2000 Durango with the tow package and the 5.9L
Magnum V-8. It does a great job. We pull through the mountains a lot and no,
we don't break any speeding records, but it pulls up the Saluda pass just fine.
Now, gas mileage really sucks, average 8 MPG, but what can you expect. We are
pulling around 6000lbs with no problems.
