I suggest you read this before towing. Good information from Pop-Up Times
about safety, towing capabilities, towing restrictions, etc.....

Here's my opinion. The Liberty is a light, short wheelbase and tall vehicle.
This makes it less suitable for towing than other vehicles. I would assume
that the trailer would push the Liberty around. You would probably
experience some severe sway too. Maybe someone who has experience towing
with this type of vehicle can shed some light...

It also says you will need the trailer tow group and the 3.7L Power Tech V6
engine. I have a 2000 Jeep Wrangler and we used to have a 1999 Chevrolet
Tracker which is similar to the Liberty, it didn't have that type of rating
as what the Liberty says it has, but I wouldn't want to pull a 4000 lb
trailer across country or up any hills with it. We have a 1700 lb one
unloaded and pulling it with a Ford Explorer is fine enough. I would be a
little edgy pulling anything over 3000 lb on it and it is rated at 5500 lbs.
For the same price you could probably get a truck that would pull it more
comfortably. I was looking at trading my Jeep in for a truck back around
December. I found a brand new 2001 (only one left) Ford Supercrew V-8 for an
out the door price of $25,000. The sticker was well over $30,000. You can
find some great deals. Just gotta look. May not be the exact vehicle you
want, but then you have to decide how much are you going to be camping and
if it will be worth it or not.

Don't trust what the dealers say about it though....Play it safe. Afterall ,
they aren't going to be there for you when you end up in a ditch.

Don't know why your popup would weigh 4,000#, but if it does you are way
overloaded!!

Dear Jeep Liberty Enthusiast:

I'm not sure where you got your information that the new Jeep Liberty has a
5,000 lb towing capacity. I recently read that it was 2,500.

It is definitely in the "light-duty" SUV category anyhow.

I tow my Coleman Westlake with an Isuzu Trooper with a 5,000 lb tow capacity
and have never had any problem. I didn't even buy the tow package, nor do I
use the electric brakes on the pop-up (although I plan to).

Why not look into the Trooper? It has excellent reliability, and lately, the
dealerships have been advertising 0% interest for up to 5 years. They can cost
as little as $25,000, fully loaded, if you haggle properly. That's what I
bought mine for. With $5,000 down, I pay around $360.00 a month.

With no offense to you loyal Jeep owners, why would you buy a vehicle with such
disastrous ratings?

It'll tow it but you'll definitely know it's there. Make DARNED sure
you have at least 350 lbs of tongue weight on the hitch ball. And with
that much weight on the hitch ball, you're going to need some help to
lift the rear end with a load-leveling device like a pair of air bags
between the rear axle and frame/unibody. Otherwise the steering will be
pretty light and your headlights will point to the sky. Quite a few
companies make them, I'd seriously look into installing something like
that on your Liberty asap. I towed the same load with my '89 Cherokee
also rated to tow 5,000 lbs and the load leveling air bags made all the
difference in the world.

Sorry, I had hoped so. I had a Niagara until two weeks ago.

I have never driven a Liberty nor do I have any information (except it is
NOT an import) directly, so to speak, I hope.

I would be suspect of the short wheelbase and high center of gravity for
such a large popup.

I DO like the way they look!

If I didn't work for Ford Motor I would like to try one (my Father is
retired Chrysler). Can I interest you in an F-150??
Tows the Niagara beautifully and is rated for 6,000! :-))

Good luck, hope it all works for you whichever way you go.

Not the Liberty enthusiast but on Jeeps website the 6 cyl with the 4 spd
auto is rated at 5000. The 5 speed and the 4cyl 's were 2500....

I tow a toy box that is 18 feet long with my Liberty filled with 2 quads
and all the gear . I use a equalizing hitch, tranny cooler , electric
brakes , 91 octane gas and it does fine. I admit that i do use all of the
210 ponies under the hood on long hills, but i play it safe and do 55 mph
and some common sense always helps. I say I am pulling about 3800 lbs.
,about the same weight as the liberty it's self.

Happy to tell you that your 97 Wrangler Sahara *is rated* at 2000 kg (4500
lb) with a *braked* trailer one ! I got this info from DCs uk website. The
2000lb figure which every one quotes comes from DCs us website and doesnt
mention the braked trailer.

Another sourse is the Trailer Life web site. Every year they put
tow-ratings in their magazine. Their web site has tow ratings from 1999 -
2001. Anything prior to 1999 you can order a back copy for less than $4

Are you ever wrong! My Liberty weighs 4115 FROM the factory!

That really doesn't affect the fact that the short wheelbase and high centre
of gravity make for a poor tow vehicle.

Not sure about the Liberty, the tow rating with V6 is 5,000...

My Grand Cherokee does just fine with a pop-up, but has a
4.0L inline 6 instead of the V6...

2002 tow ratings for most SUV's and light trucks are posted
here....

I got it from:

http://www.chryslerjeep.co.uk/jeep/current/newcars/html/html/modeltechspec.a
sp

However, having doublechecked, my owners pamphlet states in several places
that the 99 Wrangler is capable of towing 1800 kg for the 2.5 litre and
about 1100 kg for the 4.0 litre neither making mention of braked trailers or
not... I am very surprised the 4 litre is so outclassed by the 2.5 in this
respect / outclassed by damn near everything including a series 2A 88"
Landy from the early 70s whose 60 hp engine will tow 5000 lb.

I'll email D C and see if I can get a better (another ?) answer

Dave.

IMHO, the Liberty seems a little short for heavy towing, might have some sway
problems.

in a way that it's like trying to pull a train with one i have heard a few
people got new axles front and rear with 411's so it would get out of it's
own way just to tow a 25 ft speed boat
