I've looked at the shortest, fastest and scenic routes. The shortest looks
like two lane unpaved road, with lots and lots of curves. I won't mind if it
is scenic and worth the slow driving. I would appreciate your
recommendations.
Thanks

A question comes to mind: Why Fayetteville? Do you have relatives
there? Fayetteville is over 300 miles from Pigeon Forge! Why not
Charlotte or Asheville?

If you want scenic, take NC 87 north to US 421. Follow US 421 west
until you get to the Blue Ridge Parkway. THIS is a scenic parkway; the
speed limit is 45 mph and there are places to camp near the Parkway.
Plus, it takes you down to US 441 which will then take you to Pigeon
Forge.
Going back to Fayetteville, try taking US 321 to the Foothills Parkway.
When you get to US 129, head east. (BTW, US 129 is a VERY curvy road,
but it is scenic and there are places to pull off the road.) Once
you're over the state line, take NC 28 (another curvy but scenic road)
to US 64. Take US 64 east until you get to US 74. Take US 74 east
until you get to Laurinburg. Here you'll take US 401 to Fayetteville.
A longish trip, but certainly do-able in 10 days.

I wondered the same thing. When we go to GSMNP (even the NC side)
it takes us almost 7 hours to drive from Goldsboro to Bryson
City!

421 will take you farther north than you really need to be. It comes up to Boone NC. The Blue Ridge Parkway is 45 mph all the way, which will slow you down considerably.
We're considering going either at Easter or for Mother's Day ourselves. We've been trying to find a campground that doesn't charge extra for our kids, both under 18. But haven't had much luck so far. We're now considering staying in one of
the parks in the GSMNP instead. It might be farther to drive, but we're a family & want family rates.
