Hi,

I also have an old Starcraft Pop-Up Camper (circa 1978)
The drip edge catches water behind it, and has rotted the wood out that
is in the sides of the top section.

I know I can figure out how to remove the top section.
Does anyone have any advice on how to replace the wood in the sides?

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Joe

Joe,
I have a 1977 Galaxy and have a copy of the service manual. I ordered it
from Starcraft for $20. One of the sections shows how to remove the roof.
You can order the manual from Starcraft by calling 1-800-945-4787 Ext 350.
If you have a local dealer they may refer you to them. You may also try
calling the 1-800 # and ask for technical assistance for some ideas. There
was a previous post from 5/20 about roof repairs and I saw a post a while
back about replacement cushions...it may have been on the Pop-up times news
board. One more note, I have ordered parts from Starcraft and their prices
are reasonable

Thanks for the info Barney.
Actually - I have the owners manual and know how to remove the roof.
Now trying to replace the wood in the sides of the roof - that is a different
story.
And that is the advice I am looking for.

I thought of making a jig and routering the old off, and splicing in new wood.
But haven't really figured out a good method.

Thanks for your input,

Joe

Joe,
We bought a 1988 Jayco a few years ago; the canvas and the wood inside the
roof was bad.
Afraid I can't give you specifics on "how-to", but my husband did replace
the wood and canvas. He'd worked on mobile homes and rv's for alot of years,
and knew what he was doing.
The camper looked like a big jigsaw puzzle, taken apart. I wondered how
he would ever put it back together.
On ours, the water from the a/c dripped down , and over time, rotted the
wood. When he had cut the pieces, he polyurethaned them with about two or
three coats, to help seal them against water. After the new "tent" was back
on, and the puzzle put back together, he put a neat mini-gutter on the rear of
the roof, along with a short length of clear tubing, draining the water away
from the camper. Sounds weird, but is quite inconspicuous.
However you do it, good luck!

I've never actually taken the old wood out of the ceiling, but I did
buy one with it all removed. I wound up finishing the job of putting
a new roof into the thing. It looks like they carefully pry it out from
the thin aluminum outer shell. From all indications, there is glue and
possibly some foam type insulation there. Be careful though, that
aluminum is paper thin! The rotted sections should just fall out of
it anyway.
