Hi all,
I was looking at generators this evening. If price were no object I would
definitely go with the Honda EU1000 or EU2000 but at $650 and $850 they are
out of my price range for now. I saw the coleman powermate at $400 its
power rating falls between the two Hondas it is however noiser at 73dB as
opposed to 59dB for the Hondas. Question??Has anyone here actually heard
one of the Hondas and the Coleman. How much difference does 14dB make. Any
input is appreciated.
Thanks,
Keith

73 db is in the heavy traffic category.
59 db is just below ordinary conversation.

As a rule of thumb, 10 db doubles the sound you hear.

Hi Keith, I own a Honda EX1000 (pre-EU 1000?) and it's a quiet little honey.
If your thinking about a campground apt. you'll still have to put it behind
something to sheild the noise but from what I've seen this one is about
state of the art. Power went out in my neighborhood and I used it to run
some essential things(tv,fan, battery charger) without any thought about
noise. Any luck selling your P/U? Stimpy.PS, the one thing I heard about the
powermate is that it uses aluminum wire for the windings and has a nasty
habit of burning out. That's what I heard.......

Keith,
I'm sure there are some technical types out there that will correct my
thinking on this but there is actually a fairly large difference between 59 and
73 db. In fact, the 73 is over 10 times louder than the 59. However, at the
level of intesity, you may not perceive it as 10 time louder. Decibels do not
increase or decrease in a linear fashion. The dB scale is logarithmic; 90 dB of
sound is ten times louder than 80 dB and 100 times louder than 70 db. If you
want some comparisons of what different noise levels are like, go to:
http://www.lhh.org/noise/decibel.htm.
However, as a camper who enjoys a quiet campsite, my recommendation to
anyone who really needs a generator would always be to get the quietest one
possible.

If your seriously interested in the pulse I'll sell you mine slightly used
(less then 10 hours or less) for $250 if your not too far from PA and can
pick it up.

It isn't just the noise level it also weighs about twice of what the Honda
does.

Ed

BTW the $250 price is good for anyone who is interested in it.

Unfortunately, INCORRECT! Decibels is a unit of sound measurement based on
a logarithmic scale ... sound level DOUBLES with every 3 db increase!

No, Dick is correct. Three db doubles the _power_, not the percieved
_volume_ or loudness. The average listener can barely detect 1 db
change in volume, 3 db sounds signifigantly louder, but a 10 db
increase is required for something to sound "twice as loud".

Well, I own the Coleman and I've heard (just barely) the little Honda....
Wish I would have been able to get the Honda.... that's all I can say!
Standing right next to the Honda you can carry on a normal conversation and
with the Coleman if you set it the length of your powercord PLUS an
additional 25 footer, you can hold a normal conversation on the other side
of your trailer away from the gen! Hopefully that will give you some idea
of the "real world" difference in them!

Would it be possible to make some sort of insulated box in which to put the
generator to cut down on noise? Thinking of getting one and was just
wondering?

Yes, but you have to be careful and provide some type of air circulation,
since it is an air cooled engine. One way is to build the box so that air can
enter the box along the ground. The heated air will rise, so you get some
benefit from convection. The noise will tend to bounce off the side of the
box and be reflected over the top of the opposite side, so a little higher
side would have some noise reducing benefit. A box large enough to not have
to worry about air circulation will also have almost no noise attenuation
benefit. You can spend a lot of money trying to make a noisy generator quiet.
Before you spend the bucks for the generator, try quieting your lawn mower.
Lots and lots of mechanical noise, not just exhaust noise.

Agreed; keep in mind you still have to get the exhaust out of the box.
You can't just let it blow around inside or you are really asking for
a fire. So you will get that irritating low frequency lawn mower noise
even if you shield the mechanical clatter. Once you start talking
about building and insulating an enclosure, and installing a better
muffler, and figuring out how the heck to transport the stuff in your
trailer or pickup....it just makes sense to buy a better, quieter
generator.

Keith,

The coleman will not make you any friends in a campground. Without getting
in to sound power numbers suffice it to say it is LOUD. The honda's on the
other hand are almost silent. The difference is clearly night and day. You
get what you pay for. For what it's worth Southwest fasterners has the
EU1000i for $619 with free shipping and no tax...

Good luck.

Keith,

Let me set the record straight. Do not call Southwest Fasteners. I'm not
going to get into the details but they do not have any of EU Honda
Generators in stock. If you end up considering a Honda generator the
absolute best place to go is Mayberry's (I just bought a EU2000i from them
today).

Take care and again, good luck.

Thanks,
Keith
