73 db is in the heavy traffic category.
59 db is just below ordinary conversation.
As a rule of thumb, 10 db doubles the sound you hear.

It isn't just the noise level it also weighs about twice of what the Honda
does.

BTW the $250 price is good for anyone who is interested in it.

No, Dick is correct. Three db doubles the _power_, not the percieved
_volume_ or loudness. The average listener can barely detect 1 db
change in volume, 3 db sounds signifigantly louder, but a 10 db
increase is required for something to sound "twice as loud".

Yes, but you have to be careful and provide some type of air circulation,
since it is an air cooled engine. One way is to build the box so that air can
enter the box along the ground. The heated air will rise, so you get some
benefit from convection. The noise will tend to bounce off the side of the
box and be reflected over the top of the opposite side, so a little higher
side would have some noise reducing benefit. A box large enough to not have
to worry about air circulation will also have almost no noise attenuation
benefit. You can spend a lot of money trying to make a noisy generator quiet.
Before you spend the bucks for the generator, try quieting your lawn mower.
Lots and lots of mechanical noise, not just exhaust noise.

Agreed; keep in mind you still have to get the exhaust out of the box.
You can't just let it blow around inside or you are really asking for
a fire. So you will get that irritating low frequency lawn mower noise
even if you shield the mechanical clatter. Once you start talking
about building and insulating an enclosure, and installing a better
muffler, and figuring out how the heck to transport the stuff in your
trailer or pickup....it just makes sense to buy a better, quieter
generator.

The coleman will not make you any friends in a campground. Without getting
in to sound power numbers suffice it to say it is LOUD. The honda's on the
other hand are almost silent. The difference is clearly night and day. You
get what you pay for. For what it's worth Southwest fasterners has the
EU1000i for $619 with free shipping and no tax...

Good luck.

Let me set the record straight. Do not call Southwest Fasteners. I'm not
going to get into the details but they do not have any of EU Honda
Generators in stock. If you end up considering a Honda generator the
absolute best place to go is Mayberry's (I just bought a EU2000i from them
today).

Take care and again, good luck.
